Victoria Smurfit & Mixed Bag Media's Short unveiled at Cork Film Festival
10 Nov 2017 :
A timely new Irish short drama starring Victoria Smurfit (Once Upon a Time) will screen at 62nd Cork International Film Festival. 'The Secret Market' a contemporary mystery thriller that deals with the subject of information and high profile reputations will screen as part of the 'Its good to talk' shorts showcase Saturday November 11th at 11.45 in the Gate Cinema.

Smurfit plays Amy McCarthy, a doctor who has risen through the medical ranks to become chief surgeon. She has a near perfect life until her past comes back to haunt her. The film stars an impressive ensemble of Irish actors including Tadhg Murphy (Black Sails, Vikings), Mark Huberman (Frank, Noble), Camille O’Sullivan (Rebellion), Jonathan White (Love Rosie, Noble) and Eric Lalor (Fair City).

Co-director, Martina McGlynn said ahead of the film's screening:
"Secrets, lies, uncovering the truth, its a good old fashioned thriller that feels so relevant now considering the current scandals rocking the entertainment and arts world" .

Filmed on location in Ireland throughout Dublin city and Tullamore County Offaly the film was shot by IFTA winning Director of Photography James Mather (Frank, Ripper Street). Music was composed by Golden Globe nominated and IFTA winning composer Brian Byrne (Albert Nobbs, The Secret Scripture). The film is the debut short from Limerick writer Conor Ryan.

"I’m thrilled to be screening at the Cork Film Festival" commented co-directer Garret Daly "My very first short was screened there in the late nineties and we’ve had a good relationship down through the years. It such a nice festival to be apart of. Victoria portrays this character so convincingly that it makes all of us question our past and if we have secrets that one day may come back to haunt us".

'The Secret Market' has already picked up a few notable awards on its festival journey, including Best Screenplay at the Rhode Island International Film Festival and the Audience Award for Best Short at the Richard Harris Film Festival. The film produced by Martina McGlynn, Victoria Smurfit and Garret Daly through Mixed Bag Media.

'The Secret Market' will screen at the 62nd Cork International Film Festival Saturday November 11th at 11.45 in the Gate Cinema.
