HBO has given the green light to a pilot and nine episodes of George R.R. Martin’s epic ‘Game of Thrones’. The shoot of what is expected to be the biggest television series ever filmed in Europe will commence in June in Northern Ireland and will see the return of stars including Sean Bean, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Lena Headey. more

FÁS Screen Training Ireland has teamed up with The Magic Light Producer Placement Programme in the UK to guarantee one place for a producer whose work benefits the Republic of Ireland’s film industry. The five month course, for which applications are currently being sought, is intended to provide up-and-coming film producers with insight into the working operations and business realities of the film market. more

02 Mar 2010 Channel 4 Orders Network Ireland Television Shorts
Channel 4 U.K. has inked a deal with Network Ireland Television (NITV) for the acquisition of 33 short films from the Irish distributor’s library of 850 titles. The film package represents independent productions from British, Scottish, Irish and American directors, as well as films funded by the Irish Film Board, Scottish Screen and various U.K. regional funding agencies. more

02 Mar 2010 'Avatar' Sinks 'Titanic' To Take Irish Box Office Crown
'Avatar', the feature directed, produced and written by James Cameron has officially become the number one film of all time at the Irish box office, having surpassed previous record holder 'Titanic' on Sunday, February 28th, with total box office earnings for the Republic Of Ireland and Northern Ireland reaching €9,747,390. The film was already the highest grossing film in box office history worldwide. more

02 Mar 2010 Arts Council Reduces Funding Across the Board
In the month of February the Arts Council announced over 350 funding decisions for 2010, an investment totaling just over €49 million. Within this figure all areas of the arts including literature, dance, theatre and music see a decrease in funding from last year’s allowances. The funding in the area of film decreased from €2,395,400 in 2009 to €2,018,200 for 2010. more
