Northern Irish Documentary ‘Road’ gets UK Distribution
22 Apr 2014 | Directed, written and produced by Diarmuid Lavery and Michael Hewitt, sports documentary ‘Road’ has been acquired for distribution in the UK by indie distributor Kaleidoscope Entertainment. The deal was negotiated with British sales banner The Works International. It is hoped that the film will have a release in June.

‘Michael Smiley: Something to Ride Home About’ TX 22.20 21 April on BBC NI
16 Apr 2014 | After leaving Northern Ireland in 1983, comic-actor of stand-up, TV and film, Michael Smiley returns his roots after more than 30 years to indulge in his greatest passion: cycling. Three-part TV series ‘Michael Smiley: Something to Ride Home About’ is a Green Inc Film and Television production for BBC One Northern Ireland made with the support of Northern Ireland Screen Agency. The first episode will air next Monday.

Brie Larson Cast in Lenny Abrahamson’s ‘Room’
10 Apr 2014 | Brie Larson, whose recent credits include ‘21 Jump Street’, ‘Don Jon’ and ‘Short Term 12’, has signed up to star in ‘Room’, the fifth feature of acclaimed Irish director Lenny Abrahamson. ‘Room’ is based on Emma Donoghue’s best-selling novel, and Donoghue will be writing the adapted screenplay. Ed Guiney of Element Pictures will produce the film.

Mary Murray for Irish Gangster Film ‘Control’
04 Apr 2014 | Mary Murray, who has played brothel madam Janet for the last two seasons of ‘Love/Hate’, will take on the role of Emily in a new Irish gangster film called ‘Control’, which is currently in pre-production. She will star alongside Joe D’Onofrio (‘Goodfellas’), Paul Ronan (‘The Devil’s Own’), Tommy O’Neill (‘The General’), Pascal Scott (‘Grabbers’), Mark Dunne (Ado in ‘Love/Hate’), and Gerry Moore (‘Intermission’).

Will Forte to present at the IFTAs
28 Mar 2014 | Hollywood actor and star of ‘Saturday Night Live’ Will Forte will be coming to Dublin next week to attend the Irish Film and Television Awards. Forte will also be attending a special screening of ‘Run & Jump’, which the actor stars in, organised by the Irish Heart Foundation to mark National Stroke Week. The Irish Heart Foundation is the national charity fighting heart disease and stroke.

Young ‘GOT’ Actor Art Parkinson to star in ‘San Andreas’
18 Mar 2014 | Art Parkinson, a twelve year old Irish actor from Moville, Co. Donegal, has been cast in action film ‘San Andreas’. The young actor will star opposite Dwayne Johnson (‘Fast and Furious 6’), Carla Gugino (‘Night at the Museum’) and Alexandra Daddario (‘Percy Jackson’) in the feature from New Line Cinema.

New Casting Agency Set Up in North West by Karen Gorman
07 Mar 2014 | Karen Gorman set up her Speech and Drama Academy ten years ago and now has venues in Letterkenny and Starnolar, Co. Donegal. Running the business with her husband Garry Gorman B.TECH ED., GRAD. DIP Arts, Karen’s Academy runs a programme of acting performances from September to December. The students, from age three right up to adults, also have acting performance exams with the Irish Board of Speech and Drama.

Barkhad Abdi in talks to star in ‘The Place That Hits the Sun’
26 Feb 2014 | Since making his film debut as the antagonist Muse in ‘Captain Philips’, a performance that recently earned him a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor as well as an Oscar nomination, the second film appearance of Barkhad Abdi has garnered much anticipation. Now it has been confirmed that the Somalian actor is in talks to star in ‘The Place That Hits the Sun’, directed by Jim O’ Hanlon from Dublin.

Ronan Keating to star in ‘The Riders’
24 Feb 2014 | Ronan Keating, best-known for his musical career which included being the lead singer of Irish band Boyzone as well being a solo artist, made his big screen debut in romantic comedy ‘Goddess’. Keating has now been cast in his second film appearance for ‘The Riders’, an adaptation of Tim Winton's book of the same name.

07 Feb 2014 | Entertainment One Films (eOne) has acquired the US distribution rights to ‘The Grand Seduction’. The Canadian comedy premiered at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival five months ago and stars Brendan Gleeson (‘The Guard’, ‘Calvary’) in the lead role.

Irish Titles Screen in Berlin
07 Feb 2014 | Last week, IFTN reported that Calvary, The Food Guide to Love and Last Hijack were to be screened in the Official Selection of the Berlin Film Festival (see here), which commences today and continues until the 16th February. Five Irish titles will also screen at the European Film Market (EFM).

04 Feb 2014 | Richard Dormer (‘GOT’, ‘Good Vibrations’), Ardal O’ Hanlon (‘Father Ted’, ‘London Irish’) and newcomer Orlagh O’ Keefe from Belfast are confirmed key members of the all-star cast for new Nick Jr. series ‘Driftwood Bay’. Stephen Fry, Peter Mullan, Tameka Empson, Jane Horrocks and Annette Crosbie will also lend their voices to the pre-school animated series.

Cillian Murphy returns to BBC’s ‘Peaky Blinders’
