Bernardo Bertolucci’s ‘Me and You’ named film of the year by Italy’s oldest film awards
Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci’s latest film ‘Io e Te’ (Me and You) has been selected as film of the year by Italy’s Nasri d’Argento (Silver Ribbons) honors. The film premiered a year ago out of competition at last year’s Cannes film festival and has since been doing the rounds on the festival circuit. Despite receiving a mixed critical reception and limited releases globally, the film will screen in the U.S. for the first time next month at the upcoming San Francisco International Film Festival. The film centers on an introverted teenage boy who tells his parents he is going on a ski trip, but instead spends his time alone in a basement. ‘Me and You’ is Bertolucci’s first film in 10 years, since the successful and well-received ‘The Dreamers’, starring Eva Green and Michael Pitt. Bertolucci is perhaps best known for ‘Last Tango in Paris’, which starred Marlon Brando, and for the Italian classic ‘The Conformist’. The Nasri d’Argento honor will be Bertolucci’s third; he won for Best Director for ‘The Last Emperor’ and ‘Last Tango in Paris’. The awards are Italy’s oldest film honors, dating back to 1946. He will be presented with the award at a special ceremony in Rome on May 30th.

Kim Novak will be ‘Guest of Honour’ at this year’s Cannes Film Festival
Legendary actress Kim Novak, who is perhaps best known for her dual role as Madeleine Elster and Judy Barton in Alfred Hitchcock’s timeless classic ‘Vertigo’, will be recognised as the guest of honour by the Cannes Film Festival this year. The announcement was made by the organisation yesterday, and the retired actress will attend the festival in honor of the restoration of ‘Vertigo’. Novak received much praise for her acting talents throughout her career, and even though she starred in many classic Hollywood films of the 1950s and 1960s, such as ‘The Man with the Golden Arm’ alongside Frank Sinatra in 1955 and ‘Strangers When We Meet’ alongside Kirk Douglas in 1960, many see her turn in ‘Vertigo’ as her finest performance. The 80-year old actress will attend the closing ceremony and award an as-yet unnamed prize on May 26th.

Watch the trailer for ‘Thor: The Dark World’
Marvel has released the first trailer for the next instalment in the ‘Thor’ franchise: ‘Thor: The Dark World’. The film is directed by Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones, Mad Men, The Sopranos) and follows the hammer-wielding Nordic God as he battles an ancient race of Dark Elves led by the vengeful Malekith (Doctor Who’s Christopher Eccleston) who threatens to plunge the universe back into darkness after the events of ‘The Avengers’. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Rene Russo, Ray Stevenson, and Anthony Hopkins. The film will be released in Ireland in 3-D on November 8th.
