President Michael D Higgins is to present this year’s Radharc Documentary Film Awards in Dublin on October 25.
The Radharc Trust, organisers of the event, made the announcement to coincide with their call for entries for the biennial awards with the deadline for submissions set for September 10 at 5pm. The awards will be presented by the President in the Alexander Hotel in Dublin.
The Radharc bronze trophy will be awarded for a documentary film in “the tradition and ethos of Radharc” that has been screened on Irish TV during the past two years.
A second trophy will be awarded for a short similar documentary, made but not necessarily screened on television during the same period.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first Radharc film on Teilifis Eireann on January 12, 1962. The Radharc Awards are presented to the producers of documentaries which address national or international topics of social justice, morality or faith and honour the memory of the late Fr Joe Dunn, co-founder of past independent production company Radharc Films.
Awards are presented every two years to the producers of documentaries of outstanding quality, which address national or international topics of social justice, morality and faith.
Previous winners of Radharc trophies include Adrian McCarthy with his documentary ‘AIDS in Africa – A Missing Generation’; Eddie Doyle for his project ‘Complex Problems: St Teresa's Gardens’; Annette Kinne’s ‘Fr. Shay Cullen – Taking a Stand’ and Loic Jourdain for his documentary ‘Fear na nOileain’.
