Following a successful run on the festival circuit, Rich Peppiatt’s Kneecap will be released in US cinemas from August 2nd, 2024.
Rich Peppiatt’s Kneecap is set release theatrically nationwide in the US from August 2nd, with an Ireland and UK theatrical release date yet to be announced. This follows a successful festival circuit run, with Kneecap becoming the first Irish language film to be selected by Sundance, and the first Irish feature film to win an award at the festival since John Carney’s Once in 2007.
The most recent synopsis for the film is as follows: “When fate brings Belfast schoolteacher JJ into the orbit of self-confessed ‘lowlife scum’ Naoise and Liam Og, the needle drops on a hip hop act like no other. Rapping in their native Irish language, Kneecap fast become the unlikely figureheads of a Civil Rights movement to save their mother tongue. But the trio must first overcome police, paramilitaries, and politicians trying to silence their defiant sound - whilst their anarchic approach to life often makes them their own worst enemies.”
Kneecap was produced by Jack Tarling and Trevor Birney for Fine Point Films and Mother Tongues Films, with Patrick O’Neill at Wildcard acting as Co-Producer. Funding for the film was provided by Northern Ireland Screen, the Irish Language Broadcast Fund, Screen Ireland, the BFI (awarding National Lottery funding), Coimisiún na Meán and TG4, with backing from Great Point Media.
Kneecap will have its UK premiere opening Sundance Film Festival: London on June 6th. The film is set to be released in Irish cinemas by Wildcard and Curzon later this year.
