Cinemagic
The workshops are aimed at children between the ages of 6 and 12, and cover storyboarding, character design, flipbooks, lego animation, and rotoscoping.

Cinemagic is an organisation with international networks and a worldwide reputation for excellence in children’s and youth programming.

The first of Cinemagic Dublin’s June workshops is the Storyboarding & Character Design for Animation Workshop, for ages 8 - 12.

Every animated film, from million dollar Disney films to low budget short films, all start with a storyboard. This informal, fun and informative workshop led by storyboard artist Damien O'Connor will use examples and exercises to give participants the knowledge they need to visually tell a story, participants will then be able to storyboard stories and create new characters of their very own (stories can be provided and all levels of drawing ability catered for).

This workshop takes place Saturday 24th June, 1pm, in the Liffey Trust Studios in Dublin.

Taking place at the same time and location is the Create Your Own Flipbook Practical Workshop, for ages 6 to 12.

This workshop, led by the Can Do Academy, returns to one of the very first and most important methods of animation: the flipbook. They are a fun and informative way for children to learn about the basic principles of animation, and a great way for them to tell their very own stories. Flipbooks and art materials will be provided.

At 3:30pm, the Can Do Academy will also present a Lego Animation Workshop  for ages 6 to 12.

Using Lego to animate is a big hit with young participants and delivers quick results. Children can let their imagination run wild as they construct and animate worlds in front of the camera. This workshop offers the opportunity for participants to discover the green screen. The facilitator will introduce the skills needed for stop motion animation as well as working alongside participants to design characters, settings and create a story. Each participant will receive a copy of their film at the end of the workshop.

Also at 3:30pm, is the Rotoscoping: Practical & Creative Workshop, for ages 8 to 12.

Rotoscoping is an early animation technique from 1915, which still plays a large role in cinema today. In this 2-hour workshop led by Wheelworks, the young participants will be encouraged to explore different approaches to develop their own unique rotoscoping style. It will enable the young people to produce their own short video clip and then blend it with animation and live action. Using iPads and applying this Rotoscoping technique they will create realistic and detailed motion by tracing over live-action footage they film.
