Tension Structures was created through the Arts Council’s "Reel Art" arts documentary scheme.
Feargal Ward and Adrian Duncan’s Tension Structures has been selected for the World Showcase section of North America’s largest documentary film festival Hot Docs.

The film was created through the Arts Council’s Reel Art arts documentary scheme and was co-produced by the Pompidou Centre, Paris. The film premiered at IDFA, Amsterdam in November 2019 before screening at other European festivals.
The film follows an unnamed engineer as he undertakes a rail trip from the site of a long-demolished bridge in a quiet Bavarian town to a giant cloud made of fabric in Paris. As the journey unfolds a series of ambitious tensile structures from the recent and distant past are revealed, all holding different promises of utopian futures. The film explores the structural and social forces affecting a continent on the brink of fracture, forging unexpected connections between some of these structures and the tensions surrounding the Gilets Jaunes protests.

Speaking about his projects selection, co-director Feargal Ward told IFTN:

“It's a real honour to be selected for this year’s Hot Docs festival. We were looking forward to presenting the film in person, but unfortunately, the festival has had to move online this year due to the current pandemic, with public screenings postponed until later this year. It’s a difficult moment for filmmakers whose films rely on the positive exposure that these large festivals bring.”

Co-director Adrian Duncan added:

“We are very pleased to be included in Hot Docs 2020. We’d like to thank the Arts Council of Ireland, Centre Pompidou and Centre Culturel Irlandais for their support in making this film. We look forward to presenting in person in Toronto again soon. In the meantime, we hope everyone stays safe and healthy.”

Tension Structures was written and directed by Feargal Ward (The Lonely Battle of Thomas Reid, Yximalloo) and Adrian Duncan (Bungaló Bliss, Memory Room). It was filmed by Feargal Ward with additional photography by Jonathan Sammon. The script was written by Adrian Duncan and was narrated by Ian Maleney, while the musical score was provided by Karl Burke.
