This is an addition to its comprehensive programme of short, feature and documentary films. In line with the tradition of the festival, they hail from countries which were part of the historical network of ancient trade routes across the Afro-Eurasian landmass that connected Persia, Middle East, Arab, East, South, and Western Asia with the Mediterranean and European world, as well as parts of North and East Africa.

Feature films are ‘Mustang’ (Deniz Gamze Ergüven) ‘Invisible’ (Dimitri Athanitis) and ‘The Albino’s Trees’ (Masakazu Kaneko). To explore all screenings please see the link to the 2017 programme below.

Directors Masterclass with Béla Tarr

  • Thomas Davis Theatre, TCD
  • Friday, March 10th

This masterclass is presented in association with Screen Training Ireland and is directed at directors, film students, film educators, actors, producers, cinematographers and writers.

The auteur director is Dean of the Film Factory at the Sarajevo Film Academy and is acclaimed for his contribution to arthouse cinema over the past three decades. With some fifty titles to his name, his accolades include a 2007 Palme d'Or nomination for ‘The Man from London’, the Silver Berlin Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival for ‘The Turin Horse’ (2011), which also earned him the FIPRESCI Prize at the Palm Springs International Film Festival the same year.

Martin Scorsese:
“[Tarr is] one of cinema’s most adventurous artists, and his films, like ‘Satantango’ and ‘The Turin Horse,’ are truly experiences that you absorb, and that keep developing in the mind”.

Gus Van Sant:
“Béla’s works … find themselves contemplating life in a way that is almost impossible watching an ordinary modern film. They get so much closer to the real rhythms of life that it is like seeing the birth of a new cinema. He is one of the few genuinely visionary filmmakers.”
