IFB Announce Q4 2016 Funding Decisions

The Irish Film Board has announced the successful applicants for development, production and distribution funding for the final quarter of last year.

The largest sum of funding goes to the production of Writer/Director Trish McAdam’s ‘End of Romance’ produced by Fleming Creative. €400,000 has been allocated to the project, which deals with a mother-daughter triangle of romance between visionary poet W.B. Yeats and bohemian revolutionary Maud Gonne.

Talent behind previously successful 2016 titles have also secured funding for new titles, with for example, ‘A Date for Mad Mary’ team Darren Thornton and Colin Thornton securing €16,000 in screenplay development funding for their latest project ‘Here Comes the Night’.

Screenplay Development
There are ten other projects alongside the Thornton brothers’ new title, with €5,000 going to Colm Cafferkey for ‘Corkscrewed’, €6,000 to Christian O’Reilly for ‘The Naked Superhero’ and €12,000 each to the following writers:

  • ‘Paradigm’, Gary Duggan & Gavin Kilduff
  • ‘Winston’, Mark Venner
  • ‘Nobody’s Angel’, Geraldine Creed
  • ‘The Gate’, Kevin Godley
  • ‘The Mystery of Love’, Andrew Meehan
  • ‘Boxes’, Naomi Sheridan

The Thornton brothers’ allocation of €16,000 is matched only by ‘Northern Light’ from Writer Brendan Heery and Writer/Director Niall Heery. The pair received awards for multiple projects, with €7,800 in Fiction Development funding to ‘RPG.’

Fiction Development Loans
There are considerably more titles in this section with twenty-eight in total. Funding allocation ranges from €6,750 to €26,000, with the largest sum going to Parallel Films’ ‘Michael Wilson’, set to be directed by Brian Kirk and written by Ronan Bennet.

‘Handsome Devil’ Writer/Director John Butler has been allocated €20,500 for ‘Papi Chulo’, also set to be produced by Treasure Entertainment.

Lorcan Finnegan whose feature debut ‘Without Name’ enjoyed its world debut at TIFF in 2016 has received €20,000 for ‘Goliath’ produced by Lovely Productions, which again sees him collaborate with Writer Garret Shanley.  Ruth Fitzmaurice, wife to ‘My Name is Emily’ director Simon Fitzmaurice and featured in Frankie Fenton Documentary ‘It’s Not Yet Dark’ has also been allocated €6,300 in funding to her debut project ‘I Found My Tribe’.

Other top fiction projects are as follows:

  • €23,500: ‘The Trainer’, Neil Jordan (Director), David Donoghue (Writer), Kilspin
  • €14,750: ‘Clown Without Borders’, George Kane (Director), S. O’Brien, J. Walmsley & D. Fox (Writers), Fastnet Films
  • €17,400: ‘The Bright Side’, Ruth Meehan (Writer/Director), Jean Pasley (Writer), Get Go Films
  • €16,500: ‘The Hole in the Ground’, Lee Cronin (Writer/Director), SP Films
  • €14,500: ‘Girl from Mogadishu’, Mary McGuckian (Writer/Director), EG Film Productions

Animation Development Loans
Three projects have received funding under this category, with €50,000 going to ‘Oops 2’, directed by Sean McCormack & Toby Genkel, written by Mark Hodkinson & Richie Conroy, and produced Moetion Films.

€20,000 goes to ‘Snoozeville’ directed by Chris Dicker and written by Alan Shannon from Jam Media. Lastly €15,000 has been allocated to ‘Clementine’ from Restoration Films, directed by Andrew Legge and co-written by Legge and Islay Bell-Webb.

International Television Drama
The IFTA-winning writer behind Irish language drama ‘An Klondike’ Marcus Fleming has been allocated €20,150 for ‘Columbus’ from Black Sheep Productions. Writing team Simon Barry and Sebastian de Souza have received €20,000 for ‘The Gulliver Curse’ from Subotica.

Documentary Development
Six projects have received funding in the amount of €15,000 each as follows:

  • ‘Funmilao Ransome-Kuti: Mother Of Africa’, Mark McLoughlin (Director), Bang Bang Teo
  • ‘Screamers’, Ciaran Cassidy (Director), Roads Entertainment
  • ‘Fat Whites Go Home’, Paul Duane (Director), Screenworks
  • ‘Shooting the Mafia’, Kim Longinotto (Director), Lunar Pictures
  • ‘I Is Who I Amn’t’, Seamus Murphy (Director), Areaman Productions
  • ‘Emmet Grogan: This is Somebody’, Donald Taylor Black (Director), Poolbeg Productions

Production
In addition to Trish McAdam’s ‘End of Romance’, which received the highest funding amount of €400,000 under the Fiction Feature production category, provisional offers of commitment were given to both ‘Sea Fever’ written and directed by Neasa Hardiman from Fantastic Films, and ‘Extra Ordinary’ for Writer/Director team Enda Loughman and Mike Ahern for Blinder Films.

Under Fiction Creative Co-Production, a provisional offer has also been made to ‘Sandition’ directed by Jim O’Hanlon, written by Simon Reade and produced by Ripple World Pictures. Also under this category are ‘Queen of Ice’ from Director Anne Sewitsky and Writers Andreas Markusson and Mette Bolstad, which is produced by Subotica and received €175,000.

Finally in this category is ‘Birthmarked’ directed by Pierre Even, written by Marc Tulin and produced by Parallel Film Productions. This project received €150,000.

Documentary production funding of €100,000 each has been allocated to ‘Mothers and Sons’ from Sinead O’Shea and Blinder Films and ‘All the Numbers’ from Ross Whitaker and Black Sheep Productions.

In additional production funding, Lance Daly’s ‘Black 47’ written by PJ Dillon and Pierce Ryan leads with €150,000, followed by €75,000 for Pat Collins’ ‘Song of Granite’ written by P. Collins, E. Mac Ghiolla Bhride and S. Wholley for Roads Entertainment.

Lesser funding of between €15,000-€25,944 has also been allocated to ‘In Loco Parentis’ (Neasa Chianain, Soilsiu Films), ‘A Storm in the Stars’ (Haifaa Al Monsour, Parallel Film Productions),  ‘Athrí/Penance’ (Tom Collins, DeFacto Films), ‘Maze’ (Stephen Burke, Mammoth Films) and ‘The Man Who Invented Christmas’ (Barhat Nalluri, Parallel Film Productions).

Distribution
Direct distribution funding of €15,000 has been allocated to Johnny O’Reilly’s ‘Moscow Never Sleeps’ from Snapshot Pictures. The same amount has been awarded in distribution support Wildcard Distribution projects ‘Crash and Burn’ (Sean O’Chualain) and ‘I Am Not A Serial Killer’ (Billy O’Brien).

Also from Wildcard Distribution is ‘The Land of the Enlightened’ from Pierre Van De Pue, which received €5,000 in distribution support.
