The US rights to surrealist love story ‘The Lobster’, produced by Element Pictures in Ireland with funding from the Irish Film Board, have moved from Alchemy to A24 in Berlin.
Alchemy acquired the film after Cannes last year where it won a Special Jury Prize as well as receiving highly positive reviews. Alchemy has originally set a US release date of March 11th for the picture, with A24 set to release a new launch date soon.
‘The Lobster’ stars Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz and John C. Reilly and is set in the near future where being single is outlawed. Obeying the laws of the time, Farrell’s character checks himself into a hotel where he has 45 days to find a mate or else be turned into an animal.
Shot in Parknasilla in Co. Kerry in Spring 2014, the film has been acclaimed by critics and made over €1 million in Ireland and the UK during its’ theatrical run last year. Aside from the Jury Prize at Cannes, the film has been nominated for five EFA Awards, seven BIFA Awards and a BAFTA Award.
‘The Lobster’ is written by Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou and produced by Ed Guiney, Lee Magiday, Ceci Dempsey and Yorgos Lanthimos. Executive Producers are Andrew Lowe, Tessa Ross and Sam Lavender.
‘The Lobster’ is an Element Pictures, Scarlet Films, Faliro House, Haut et Court, Lemming Film co-production in association with Limp and financiers include the Irish Film Board. It is out now on DVD, Blu-Ray and online in Ireland.
