Post House End of Year Round-Up: Ardmore Sound on what 2016 has to offer
15 Dec 2015 : Seán Brosnan
Five part RTÉ series ‘Rebellion’
With 2015 almost over, we talk to some of the crew over at Ardmore Sound about what 2016 has to offer.

Last week, Ardmore Sound let us in on what projects they worked on in 2015, projects which included ‘Room’, ’11 Minutes’ and ‘Sing Street’ – here they let us on what projects they have on their slate for 2016.

IFTN: WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2016?

Garret Farrell, Sound Re-recording Mixer

I'm delighted to be mixing two major 1916 centenary projects, RTE's flagship five-part drama ‘Rebellion’ and Ruán Magan's three-part documentary series and feature '1916' which is narrated by Liam Neeson. Both of these have their own challenges and incredible sound potential and it's exciting to be involved in delivering such creative projects to the screen.

Jean McGrath, Foley and ADR Mixer

We have just completed Foley for 'Rebellion’ which will be broadcast on RTÉ One as part of the 1916 centenary programs. Starting in 2016, two projects we're excited to be providing Foley for are Richie Smyth’s debut feature 'The Siege of Jadotville’ and Darren Thornton's debut feature 'A Date for Mad Mary’.

Michelle Fingleton, Supervising Sound Editor / Sound Designer

This year I got to supervise the sound for the fantastic documentary '1916', directed by Ruán Magan and narrated by Liam Neeson. The documentary takes a comprehensive look at the events of the rising. The sound on this show was quite a big undertaking because so much of it is made up of archive footage for which I created a bed of sound effects. Woven in amongst the interviews, voiceover and the stunning musical score, the added sound hopefully gives the archive footage an immediacy that helps transport the viewer back into the world of 1916 Dublin.

Staying with 1916, I've had the pleasure of supervising and editing the sound effects for RTE's new flagship drama, 'Rebellion’. I worked with a large palette of period sounds to create the soundscape of 1916 Dublin and the weaponry used in the rebellion.

Steve Fanagan, Supervising Sound Editor/ Sound Designer/ Sound Re-recording Mixer

I'm very excited about the Irish release of Lenny Abrahamson's ‘Room’. It's the film I spent a good part of 2015 working on and it's been very exciting to see it make its way out into the world since its premiere at Telluride in September, gaining critical acclaim, award wins and nominations and an ever growing audience. It's a really beautiful film, full of incredible performances. Lenny has created something very special and it was a real privilege to get to work with him on the sound design and mix for it.

ANYTHING ELSE OF NOTE HAPPENING AT ARDMORE SOUND

Jean McGrath, Foley Mixer

At the moment we're recording Foley for Jim Sheridan’s film 'The Secret Scripture’. We also just finished Foley on a Norwegian film called ‘Birkebeinerne’ (‘The Last King’) and Juanita Wilson’s next film ‘Tomato Red’.

Ken Galvin, Sound Re-recording Mixer

Despite a busy mixing schedule we managed to squeeze in the installation of a new mixing console on The Main Stage in Ardmore Sound, and its attendant back end installation. The new 64 fader Avid D-Control console provides complete integration with Pro Tools, and allows for two mixers to work simultaneously. We're running four Pro Tools systems on the stage with capacity for hundreds of tracks creating a powerful and flexible setup that further enhances The Main Stage at Ardmore as Ireland's premier mixing facility.

Mark Fitzpatrick, ADR Mixer

Hopefully it will be another busy year in 2016, starting in January which will see ‘Vikings’ make a return to our ADR stages for the completion of season four.

Niall Brady, Supervising Sound Editor/ Sound Designer.

It has been very exciting to work on so many films this year that have either been shot here or produced by Irish companies which are then finding international audiences at festivals and on cinema release. I hope 2016 continues that trend for Irish production companies and that we'll get to continue to do creative and interesting sound on some or many of those projects!

Steve Fanagan, Sound Re-recording Mixer/ Sound Designer

I'm very much looking forward to the year of work ahead. We already have a number of features and TV dramas in the schedule for the months ahead. I'm looking forward to working with this great crew and facilities we have to create the sound work that our clients seek us out for.
