Post House End of Year Round-Up: Ardmore Sound talk 2015, ‘Room’, ’11 Minutes’ and ‘Sing Street’
11 Dec 2015 : Seán Brosnan
‘Room’, ‘Sing Street’ and ’11 Minutes’ – just three of the projects that Ardmore Sound has worked on in 2015
With 2015 almost over, we talk to some of the crew over at Ardmore Sound about their year.

And what a year it has been – with work being completed on Lenny Abrahamson’s Golden Globe nominated ‘Room’, Box office hit ‘Two By Two’, Jerzy Skolimowski’s '11 Minutes’ (in cinemas now), RTÉ show ‘Clean Break’, John Carney’s ‘Sing Street’ (premiering at Sundance next year) and BIFA nominated director Corin Hardy’s acclaimed horror ‘The Hallow to name but a few.

IFTN: WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF 2015 FOR ARDMORE SOUND?

Garret Farrell, Sound Re-recording Mixer

Working on Corin Hardys terrifying debut feature film 'The Hallow’. Since its premiere at Sundance in January, it's been released worldwide and won a number of awards, and earned Corin a BIFA nomination for debut director. It's nice to see it getting the recognition it deserves.

Jean McGrath, Foley and ADR Mixer

While we had many great projects on the Foley stage this year, providing Foley for Lenny Abrahamson’s 'Room’ and John Carney’s 'Sing Street’ were definite highlights for us.

Ken Galvin, Sound Re-recording Mixer

It's been a very busy year with a great variety of film and documentaries. Mixing highlights for me would be Lenny Abrahamson's 'Room’, John Carney's ‘Sing Street’, both due for release here in 2016, and Jerzy Skolimowski '11 Minutes’, currently on release. Two documentary highlights this year were Pat Murphy's 'Tana Bana’ and Grant Gee's ‘Innocence of Memories’, both beautifully atmospheric films.

Mark Fitzpatrick, ADR Mixer.

We've had another very busy year for ADR, especially with 'Vikings’ Season Four and 'Penny Dreadful’ Season Three continuing to book ADR stage time while in production here.

Michelle Fingleton, Supervising Sound Editor/ Sound Designer

One of the highlights for me this year was getting to supervise the sound and create the sound effects for John Carney's latest film 'Sing Street’ which will be released in March 2016. I also had a busy year supervising TV drama projects including 'Clean Break’ and ‘Rebellion’.

Niall Brady, Supervising Sound Editor/ Sound Designer

Supervising and editing the dialogue and ADR on 'Room’ was a highlight, it was an intensive period of work but I think we helped deliver a great sounding mix for a fantastic film. Lenny and Element deserve every success with it!

Also seeing the release of Moetion Films animated feature ‘Two By Two’ which we worked on in 2014. It was really great to work on it was very satisfying to see it hold its place at the box office throughout the summer making it one of the highest grossing releases of 2015 in Ireland and the UK.

Steve Fanagan, Supervising Sound Editor/ Sound Designer/ Sound Re-recording Mixer

2015 has been a great year for us. We've worked with many new and returning clients, and it feels like we've done some of our biggest, most challenging and best work to date. I spent a large part of 2015 working on Lenny Abrahamson's 'Room' and it's been very exciting to see it make it's way out into the world since its premiere at Telluride in September, gaining critical acclaim, award wins and nominations and an ever growing audience. It's a really beautiful film, full of incredible performances. Lenny has created something very special and it was a real privilege to get to work with him on the sound design and mix for it. It's also been great to see Moetion Pictures debut feature, 'Two By Two’ and Corin Hardy's 'The Hallow’ go out on general release in Ireland and around the world, to see them so well received by audiences and to watch them pick up awards along the way!

IFTN: DO YOU HAVE ANY PROGRAMS IN THE CHRISTMAS TELEVISION SCHEDULE?

Jean McGrath, Foley and ADR Mixer

I recorded ADR on Peter Jackson's ‘The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey’ which will be showing on RTÉ One on St Stephens Day.

Mark Fitzpatrick, ADR Mixer

A particular highlight for me will be the broadcast of 'The Higher Hopes Choir’, a follow up to the IFTA award winning series that I mixed last year, highlighting the problems facing homeless people in Ireland.

Niall Brady, Supervising Sound Editor/ Sound Designer

I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing the RTÉ drama 'Rebellion’ which begins airing in the new year. Michelle and Garret are working on it currently and anything I've heard or seen has sounded great and looks really intriguing.

On IFTN next week, the crew at Ardmore Sound will take us through what’s on their slate for 2016. For more information on Ardmore Sound, go to www.ardmoresound.ie.

IFTN will also be featuring other post-production companies talking about their 2015 and plans for 2016 in the coming weeks.
