'What Richard Did' - the final film of the initiative - will air on Saturday, December 20th
RTÉ2 have released the official figures for the Irish movies that have been broadcasting on the channel since September 27th as part of the ‘Supporting Irish Film’ initiative.

As IFTN reported in September, the Irish Film Board partnered with RTÉ2 to free up a number of key Saturday night slots in order for Irish films to be broadcast on the channel, culminating in 12 Irish films being shown on RTÉ2 over 12 weeks with the 13th and final film - the IFTA-winning ‘What Richard Did’ – still to air on Saturday, December 20th.

Bill Malone, Controller RTÉ2 speaking to IFTN said: ‘The ’Supporting Irish Film’ initiative on RTÉ2 has been a very positive development. Supporting and championing the Irish creative sector: writers, actors, comedians, producers, directors is a core element of what we do and the recent successes of RTÉ2, particularly in increasing younger audiences, has been underpinned by quality Irish stories, voices and content. RTÉ2 is the only channel devoted to creating Irish home grown programmes for younger viewers and viewers have voted with their remotes – as this year saw RTÉ2 over take its competitors to become the second most watched channel for 15 – 24 years olds (behind RTÉ One).’

James Hickey, Chief Executive of IFB said in September: ‘Irish movies have proved very popular when broadcast on RTE. This partnership underlines RTÉ2’s and the IFB’s commitment to showcasing the best of Irish talent, ensuring Irish audiences have an opportunity to view a wide range of Irish feature films.’

The partnership kicked off on September 27th with ‘Hardy Bucks The Movie’ proving a steady hit with audiences with roughly 78,200 people tuning in representing 6.09% of the overall share and 11.82% in RTÉ2’s key demographic of 15-24 year olds.

Films over the following 12 weeks garnered an average of roughly 73,200 viewers per week with a 5.48% overall audience share and 8.22% share in the 15-24 year old demographic.

Jim Sheridan’s films proved to be the most popular with Irish audiences over the 12 weeks – with ‘The Field’, ‘My Left Foot’, ‘The Boxer’ and ‘In the Name of the Father’ all performing strongly.

Lenny Abrahamson’s ‘Adam and Paul’ also performed well, with an estimated 87,300 people watching when it aired on October 11th, representing 6.23% of the audience and 9.88% of 15-24 year olds.

‘The Boxer’, starring Daniel Day Lewis, drew in roughly 80,300 people when it aired on October 25th and garnered an impressive 12.72% of RTÉ2’s key demographic.

This viewing was surpassed by another Jim Sheridan film two weeks later, with ‘The Field’, starring Richard Harris, drawing in 16.06% of the available 15-24 year olds on November 8th.

‘In the Name of the Father’, again directed by Sheridan and starring Daniel Day Lewis, was another modest hit with audiences with almost 79,300 people tuning in to watch the Oscar nominated political drama on November 22nd.

The biggest ratings success for RTÉ2 came in the form of ‘My Left Foot’, the Oscar-winning biopic of Christy Brown, directed by Sheridan and starring Daniel Day Lewis in the role that won him his first Oscar for Best Actor. An estimated 121,700 people tuned in to watch on November 15th representing 8.99% of the audience and a notable 16.58% share of 15-24 year olds.

Other films that aired over the 12 weeks are:

  • When Harvey Met Bob
  • The Runway
  • Tara Road
  • Dancing at Lughnasa
  • A Film With Me In It
  • Ondine

The 13th and final film – the IFTA-winning ‘What Richard Did’ directed by Lenny Abrahamson and starring Jack Reynor – will air on Saturday, December 20th at 9.30pm on RTÉ2.
