29 Oct 2014 : Seán Brosnan
For the next eight Wednesdays at 9.30pm, TG4 will showcase ‘Dialanna ón Cogadh Mór’ (Diaries of the Great War), a landmark European co-production detailing a changing Europe during World War One.

‘Dialanna ón Cogadh Mór’ was a co-production between LOOKS film in Germany and Ireland’s Square One productions. The Irish elements were shot on location in Dublin, Wicklow and a purpose built trench in Slane, Co .Meath. It was filmed on the RED Epic with RED prime lens. Cathal Watters was the DOP for the project, Rachel Lysaght was the line producer, Ferdia Murphy was production designer with Gaby Rooney on wardrobe. Offline editing was done by Áine Furlong with Online/Grade by Rory Gavin at Reelgood Studios who also completed all the SFX. Shane Tobin was the Producer/Director and the series is co-written and voiced by Aindrias Ó’Cathasaigh.

The documentary series reflects a narrative that touches on Home Rule and the 1916 Rising between the years 1914 -1918 all against the backdrop of a changing Europe in the midst of war. Four years of European history are told through the diaries and first-hand accounts of the men and women of the conflict from all over Europe and Ireland. Reconstructions, archive and guiding maps of the conflict zones take the viewers on a voyage of discovery charting the events of a conflict which claimed millions of lives and destroyed most of Europe.

Producer/Director Shane Tobin said: This is a massive project to be involved in as we trace the “Great War” as it evolved into the largest conflict ever seen. Our eight hours covers all the major countries and we have added as many Irish voices from the era to reflect the huge Irish involvement in the war which by the end had seen 200,000 men serve and tragically an estimated 30,000 die in the conflict.
