Honeycomb Creative Works Masterclasses in DKIT & Derry
04 Mar 2014 : Aisling Newton
Honeycomb Creative Works is a £3.58m programme targeted at the digital content sector across most of Northern Ireland, the six border counties of the Republic of Ireland and the western seaboard of Scotland.

Masterclasses are being offered to people in Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) and at the University of Ulster, Derry. The programme is being delivered by a partnership led by University of Ulster and comprising Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) and Creative Skillset.

Sandra Scott, executive producer at Atomic Fiction, will host a visual effects masterclass in DKIT on Wednesday, March 12 from 5pm – 6.30pm. Atomic Fiction creates digital effects for today's biggest blockbuster films and commercials. They are currently working on Aaron Paul's feature debut, 'Need For Speed' (Spring 2014) and recently did the visual effects for Paramount's 'Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones'.

Scott’s career first took off as Visual Effects Producer at George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic, most notably collaborating on 'E.T.' with Steven Spielberg. She has 20 years’ experience in visual effects, motion capture and feature animation, regularly running $10–$85M digital projects from inception to completion. She has vast experience of working with young talent and will deliver a superb guest speaker event on current trends in Visual Effects (VFX), commercial opportunities that exist for local companies in Ireland and how leading studios develop talent in this area.

A two-day ‘Train the Trainer’ workshop in DSLR will also be held in the University of Ulster, Derry, with cinematography with Philip Bloom on March 10 and 11. This is an advanced workshop intended to up-skill educators so camera experience is essential. The two days will cover Q&A’s about current technologies, high-speed demonstration, lighting techniques and a review of student films with feedback from Bloom.

For the past 7 years of his 24-year career, Bloom has specialised in creating incredible film-like images with low budget video. His most iconic work is created with Canon DSLRs. As one of the biggest evangelists for their use in productions his website became the place to go to for budding filmmakers as well as experienced ones keen to embrace the new technology. His use of Canon DSLRs to shoot part of Lucasfilms’ last movie ‘Red Tails’ proved a huge point to the naysayers. This technology was proved very viable in large-scale productions.

Bloom has worked for all the major UK broadcasters, such as the BBC, ITV, C4 and Sky, as well as many others around the world including CBS, Discovery, FOX and NBC. One of his most successful projects was ‘How To Start A Revolution’ which won a BAFTA in 2012 and was also awarded prizes at several film festivals including Best Documentary at the 2011 Raindance festival.

The third workshop will be a digital cinematography seminar, again hosted by Bloom, on Wednesday, March 12, in Derry. Participants will hear about the potential of DSLR to produce high production value output for a variety of genres.

The workshops are funded by Honeycomb Creative Works and Connected and there is no charge for participants.

Places are strictly limited so to secure your place you must sign up online in advance. See below for registration details:
