First Run Features is releasing Irish documentary ‘Men at Lunch’ (Lón sa Spéir) in New York City today 20th September at the Quad Cinema, Boston on 3rd October at Boston University, in Los Angeles on 4th October at Laemmle Music Hall and in Silver Springs, Maryland, on 10th October at the AFI Silver Theatre.
Directed and produced by Galway-based brothers Seán and Eamonn Ó Cualáin, the documentary tells the story of “Lunch atop a Skyscraper,” the photograph taken during the construction of 30 Rockefeller Plaza that depicts eleven workmen taking their lunch break while casually perched along a steel girder – boots dangling 850 feet above the sidewalk, Central Park and the misty Manhattan skyline stretching out behind them.
For 80 years, the identity of the eleven men – and the photographer that immortalized them – remained a mystery. Part homage, part investigation, ‘Men at Lunch’ is the tale of an American icon, an unprecedented race to the sky and the immigrant workers that built New York.
Narrated by Fionnula Flanagan (The Guard, Life’s A Breeze, Waking Ned), the Sónta Films production won the IFTA ‘Special Irish Lanuage Award’ in 2013. It aired on TG4 in 2012 and screened at a number of international festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival.
Producer, Eamonn Ó Cualáin told IFTN, “We are delighted that ‘Men at Lunch’ is opening in various cities across the US. Since dates were announces the interest from the public & press has been incredible.”
The cast includes Paddy O’Shaughnessy, Pat Glynn, Peter Quinn, Jim Rasenberger, Ric Burns and Joe Woolhead. Editing for the documentary was done by Dáithí Connaughton. Director of Photography was Reamonn Mac Donncha, the script was written by Niall Murphy and John Murphy, executive producer was Mícheál Ó Meallaigh (TG4) and post-production sound was done by Killian Fitzegerald.
