This St. Patrick’s Day the Light House Cinema will hold a special screening of feature documentary, “The Spirit of ‘45”, followed by a satellite broadcast Q&A with the film’s director Ken Loach.
'The Spirit of '45’ explores the trials and tribulations of life and society after the war, and the changes that had to be made to better the country. It tells how the spirit of unity which buoyed Britain during the war years carried through to create a vision of a fairer, united society.
A Q&A, hosted by comedian Jeremy Hardy, will be broadcast by satellite from the Ritzy Cinema in Brixton to 40 cinemas around the UK and Ireland. The special screening event takes place at 3pm and audience members will have the opportunity to text in or tweet their questions to a panel including Ken Loach, author Owen Jones and NPC general secretary Dot Gibson.
Director Ken Loach has used film from Britain’s regional and national archives, alongside sound recordings and contemporary interviews to create a rich and political social narrative. The documentary hopes to illuminate and celebrate a period of unprecedented community spirit in the UK, the impact of which endured for many years and which may yet be rediscovered today.
"The Second World War was a struggle,” says Loach. "While others made sacrifices, the determination to build a better world was as strong here as anywhere. Never again, it was believed, would we allow poverty, unemployment and the rise of fascism to disfigure our lives.”
