Festival News: Guth Gafa, Fastnet, and Fingal Film Festival

The submission deadlines for the Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival, the Fastnet Short Film Festival, and the Fingal Film Festival are all fast approaching.

The 7th Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival takes place this year in Malin village, Donegal and Derry City from the 16th-19th May. Every year, the festival screens a program of the best Irish feature documentaries, alongside its international program and this year’s deadline for submissions is Friday, 15th March. The Guth Gafa festival previously took place in Gortahork, Co. Donegal, but they have now teamed up with the 2013 UK City of Culture, Derry, to hold events in the city across the weekend to add to the city’s year-long cultural programme.

The deadline for submissions for the Fastnet Short Film Festival is Monday 18th March, and the festival this year takes place in Schull, West Cork from the 22nd -26th May. The independent festival encourages young filmmakers to submit entries and participate in the festival, as there are two awards presented to up-and-coming filmmakers: one for ‘Best Young Filmmaker – Under 22’ and one for ‘Best Junior Filmmaker – Under 17’. Acclaimed director Lenny Abrahamson will open this year’s festival with a screening of his multi-award winning film ‘What Richard Did’.

The Odeon cinema and the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Blanchardstown will host the Fingal Film Festival this year from the 8th-10th May, with this year’s submission deadline on Friday 15th March. The festival will offer a diverse range of national and international screenings, workshops delivered by industry professionals, and equipment/software demonstrations. The animation company Brown Bag Films, will also host two workshops during the festival.
