A documentary based on the first feature length Irish language film, ‘Mise Éire’, will air on TG4 on December 28.
‘Lorg na gCos - Súil Siar ar Mise Éire’ tells the definitive story of one of Ireland’s most famous documentaries, almost 50 years after the initial release of ‘Mise Éire’.
In ‘Lorg na gCos’, director of ‘Mise Éire’, George Morrison, reflects back on the making of Ireland’s first Irish language feature, with key production crew and original audience members contributing.
‘Mise Éire’, produced in 1959 and released theatrically in 1960, explored three decades of political change in Ireland from the 1890s to 1918. For many, the film was the first time they had been presented with their own history in visual form.
Morrison directed the documentary after cataloguing over 300,000 feet of archive material.
Morrison, who celebrated his 90th birthday this year, received an IFTA Award in 2009 for Outstanding Contribution to Irish Cinema.
‘Lorg na gCos - Súil Siar ar Mise Éire’ was directed by Colm Bairéad (An tÁdh, Mac an Athar) and produced by Cleona Ní Chrualaoi (The Gathering - Homeward Bound, Ceart agus Coir). The film is a co-production between Midas Productions and Colm Bairéad Ltd.
Fergal O’Hanlon (The Only Viking in the Village, Anton) was the DoP and Bernard Clarke (Ó Tholg go Tolg, Ceart agus Coir) the editor.
The production team filmed the documentary in locations around Dublin, Cork, Donegal, Derry and London between July and September 2011.
It will air as part of TG4’s Christmas schedule on Friday December 28 at 8.30pm.
