Irish Animations Impress BAFTA Kid’s Awards Judges
23 Oct 2012 : By Eva Hall
'The Amazing World of Gumball' is up for a BAFTA & Emmy this year
Irish kids TV series continue to impress on the awards circuit, with ‘The Amazing World of Gumball’ and ‘Roy’ collectively nominated for four BAFTA Children’s Awards.

‘The Amazing World of Gumball’, which is produced by Irish animation house Boulder Media, is nominated in the Animation, Writer and Television categories.

The series follows Gumball, a 12-year-old cat, who lives with his rabbit father and his brother who is a fish.

Boulder Media produced with Cartoon Network, Dandelion Studios and Studio Soi for Turner Broadcasting.

Writers Ben Bocquelet, James Lamont and Jon Foster are nominated in the Writer category. The animation already picked up two BAFTA Childrens’ Awards last year in the Writer and Animation categories, and is nominated for an International Kids Emmy Award in the Kids: Animation category this year.

Also nominated is Jam Media’s ‘Roy’, which currently airs on RTÉ and BBC, in the Drama category.

The fly-on the-wall mockumentary, which stars Simon Delaney, has just been commissioned for a third season by the BBC. The show was previously nominated for two BAFTA Awards.

Other Irish-attached nominees include ‘Tracy Beaker Returns’, the kids’ TV series based on the character created by Jacqueline Wilson for her novel ‘Tracy Beaker’, which has been directed by Irish writer and director Neasa Hardiman since 2010.

The series is up against ‘Roy’ in the Drama category, with nominations in the Television and Writer categories also.

’Avengers Assemble’, which Northern Irish cinematographer Seamus McGarvey worked on, ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1’, and Martin Scorsese’s ‘Hugo’, are all nominated in the Feature Film category.

Voting opens today (October 23) for the BAFTA Childrens’ Awards, with the winners announced on Sunday November 25 at the London Hilton on Park Lane.
