‘Roy’ Series 4 Receives Two Children’s BAFTA Nominations
22 Oct 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the nominations for its annual British Academy Children’s Awards, which honour the very best in children’s media. The ceremony will be held at the Roundhouse, London, on Sunday 23 November and will be hosted by Doc Brown.

Irish animation company Jam Media’s show ‘Roy’ has received two nominations – in the Drama category and the Writer category for Declan de Barra. John Rice, CEO of Jam Media and Executive Producer on the series, said of the nomination: “It’s great, it’s a real testament to the series itself. We’ve been nominated about five times now and won a few years ago.

“It’s just great that the ratings for Roy in the UK and all over the world are fantastic. To get a nomination like this is icing on the cake really.”

‘Roy’ won the Children’s BAFTA for Best Drama in 2012. “It meant an awful lot to Jam the company in terms of what we were able to do with it,” says John. “Having a little BAFTA emblem at the end of your email is certainly a big stamp of approval, company partners look at that.”

‘Roy’ is a fly-on-the-wall mockumentary for kids, starring Simon Delaney and Scott Graham. The series follows cartoon character Roy as he grows up in Ballyfermot in Dublin, with children who aren’t in animated form.

John Rice attributes the show’s popularity to “its universal theme of struggling to fit in, asking should you be yourself or try to be someone else. I think no matter what age you are you feel different to everyone else, but especially so when you’re a kid. With ‘Roy’, we’ve tackled debt, eating disorders and other issues is a kind of humorous way so the show goes into places not really explored in children’s television. The production values of ‘Roy’ also come into play as you can suspend your disbelief and people do believe Roy is there.”

Jam Media are currently developing a pre-school version of ‘Roy’ called ‘Little Roy’. The firm hope to be producing the project next year which, like ‘Roy’, will be a mix of animation and live action but will also include fully animated sequences which will reveal Roy’s inner dreams.

Also of Irish interest in this year’s Children’s BAFTA Awards is a nomination for pre-school series ‘Doc McStuffins’, which is produced by Brown Bag Films, in the International category. Additionally, for the fourth consecutive year, ‘The Amazing World of Gumball’, co-produced by Boulder Media, is nominated in both the Writer and Animation categories.

Voting for the BAFTA Kids’ Vote is open now and closes at 16:30 on Sunday 23 November. Children can cast their votes at www.baftakidsvote.org. Only children from the United Kingdom are permitted to vote.
