RTÉ is set to pilot a mobile journalist kit for the iPad that they have acquired from audiovisual house Avid Studio.
The new app will allow RTÉ journalists to produce broadcast-quality footage, edit it to a professional standard, and send it straight to air via their iPhone or iPad. The app comes equipped with a microphone and editing suite.
Avid Studio for iPad is an app installed with leading film-editing technology that allows users to edit video, audio and photos to a professional standard at their own pace.
RTÉ News production development manager Glen Mulcahy said RTÉ “lives and dies by the quality of our news coverage”. Having previously explored other apps, Mulcahy said the national broadcaster went with Avid’s version as it “boasts features and a precision that other systems do not offer”. He added the app is the “perfect product to support professional journalism”.
RTÉ video journalist Sean Mac an tSithigh has already tested the app by broadcasting RTÉ features. The result, according to Mulcahy, will likely see RTÉ invest in additional Avid Studio features.

While RTÉ Six One viewers won’t be watching Bryan Dobson read the news from the comfort of his own home just yet, these recent advances in technology suggest the national broadcaster is ahead of the technology pack.
