Celebrating independent, lo/no budget, DIY and artist film, Dublin’s Darklight Film Festival will take place this October 20-22nd at The Factory at Grand Canal Dock. The programme includes a range of screenings, workshops, Q&A’s, the annual Darklight Symposium and panel discussions.

This year’s festival theme is Strictly Roots, which is all about grassroots filmmaking and how friends and communities come together to make film. Kicking off the festival on Thursday October 20th is the Festival Launch Party which will be followed by a screening of Jeanie Finlay’s ‘Sound it Out’, and a Q&A with the director herself.

Other highlights of the festival include a workshop with SFX Magician and Director Evan Glodell, following a screening of his critically acclaimed feature ‘Bellflower’ and a guest programming section from Sheffield Doc/Fest Curator Hussain Currimbhoy. The documentary strand features screening of documentaries such as ‘Blood in Mobile’ highlighting the connection between phones and the civil war in the Congo, an examination of cryptic tiled messages about resurrecting the dead in ‘Resurrect Dead’ and the story of six teenage poets from Leeds in ‘We Are Poets’.

Presented in association with the Irish Film Board and Fás Screen Training Ireland is The Darklight Symposium, which will cover Grassroots film production and distribution, crowdfunding, 3.D.I.Y, Bedroom SFX and Digital Production. Panellists at the symposium include Northern England based artist and filmmaker Jeanie Finlay (Sound It Out, The Great Hip Hop Hoax), Anna Sissions of alternative film distributors DogWoof and co-director of ‘We Are Poets’ Daniel Lucchesi.

The Artist in Focus strand, which has previously featured artists including Vivienne Dick, Paddy Jolley, Willie Doherty and Gerard Byrne, will this year focus on Jessie Jones (The Spectre and the Sphere, On the Waterfront) and look at how her work investigated the language of cinema. Finally the SFX Unplugged will see producers of ‘Bellflower’ - Coatwalk Studios talk about their extraordinary DIY special effects skills.

The Darklight Film Festival is funded by the Arts Council of Ireland. Tickets cost €10 per day for one screening of whole day of events and an all weekend festival pass costs €20. For further information visit www.darklight.ie.
