Ahead of its upcoming Irish Premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh ‘Charlie Casanova’ has won two awards at the DMV International Film Festival in Washington - 'Best Film' plus 'Festival Pick.'
‘Charlie Casanova’ has already won ‘Best Actor’ for Emmett J. Scanlan at The ECU European Independent Film Festival in Paris and has just returned from three sell out screenings at the Edinburgh International Film Festival where it continued to receive wildly polemic reviews both for and against its unapologetic take on contemporary Ireland. Variety called the feature “a punishing experience…borders on audience abuse…aggressively abrasive,” while Hot Press describe it as “Passionate…Fearless…Unbelievable.”
In an interview on IFTN, Head Programmer of this years Galway Film Fleadh, Gar O'Brien, has also picked ‘Charlie Casanova’ as his "personal favourite" for the festival suggesting the film will "divide everyone." The head of the famed SXSW Film Festival in Austin Texas, Janet Pierson, who chose ‘Charlie Casanova’ to be the first Irish film ever selected for competition at SXSW, will be at the Galway Film Fleadh to introduce the film at its Irish premiere.
Independently written, produced and directed by Terry McMahon, ‘Charlie Casanova’ deconstructs a ruling class sociopath who knocks down a working class girl in a hit-and-run then uses a deck of cards to determine his fate and the film will screen on Saturday night, July 9th, 10:45pm at the Town Hall Main, Galway.
