Northern Ireland drama, ‘MO’ has been nominated for a Grierson Award in the category of Best Drama Documentary. The Channel 4 / ITV co-production explores the life and political work of Mo Mowlam, played by Julie Walters (Mamma Mia!), who was instrumental in achieving one of the most monumental landmarks in British history, the Good Friday Agreement. The Grierson awards ceremony will take place on November 2nd.
‘MO’, written by Neil McKay (Wall of Silence, Dunkirk) depicts Mo Mowlam’s rise to prominence in New Labour and her part in the events that led to Northern Ireland’s Good Friday Agreement. The all star cast includes David Haig (My Boy Jack) , Gary Lewis, Toby Jones (City of Ember, Harry Potter) and Adrian Dunbar (Ashes to Ashes).
The project is one of four nominated works in the Best Drama Documentary group. The other nominees include Peter Tavis’ ‘Endgame’, Philippa Lowthorpe’s ‘Five Daughters’ and Saul Metzstein’s ‘Micro Men’.
‘MO’ is directed by Emmy award-winner Philip Martin (Prime Suspect: The Final Act, Wallander), produced by Lisa Gilchrist (See No Evil: The Moors Murders) and executive produced by Jeff Pope for ITV Studios. The drama was filmed entirely in Northern Ireland and financed through the Northern Ireland Screen Fund supported by Invest NI and part funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
The Grierson Awards aim to commemorate the work of pioneering Scottish film maker John Grierson (Drifters). Established in 1972, the Griersons annually reward and celebrate documentaries that have made a significant contribution to the form. This year’s awards will be hosted by writer, presenter and documentary maker, Sandi Toksvig (writer, Motormouth, The Big One) and will take place on November 2nd in the BFI, Southbank.
