Minister Mary Hanafin has announced that over €360 million will be spent on capital projects across the Tourism, Culture and Sport sectors over the next four years. The minister was speaking on Wednesday, November 24th following the publication of details of the Government’s National Recovery Plan.
Minister Hanafin also reported on recent arts investments reporting that investment in the arts, culture and film sectors during the 2005 - 2010 period came in at over €1.1bn. “In that time, there has been an unprecedented investment in national and regional arts and culture infrastructure, performance venues and film and TV production capacities,”she said. ”Visitor numbers to the National Culture Institutions have grown by over 75% and participation rates in the culture and arts activities have increased.”
Minister Hanafin also spoke about the Irish Government’s plans for film promotion in the future: ”In the context of the four year plan, we will continue to prioritise capital investment in the film and audiovisual content production sector and maintain the exhibitions programmes at the National Cultural Institutions.”
A capital expenditure plan from the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport includes the new capital envelopes of €96 million in 2011; €100m in 2012; €85 in 2013 and €80 in 2014. As part of this plan the department of Tourism, Culture and Sport will contribute current expenditure savings of €76m by 2014. A full breakdown of the Tourism, Culture and Sport subheads will be outlined in the Budget on 7 December.
