It has been announced that Channel 4 is to boost Film4’s annual budget to £15m over the next five years. The move will mark a 50% increase on Film4’s current budget and submission ideas for Film 4 features will be open to Irish applicants.
A Film4 spokesperson tells IFTN that the increased budget for film development and financing comes as a result of a rise in advertising revenue. The boost comes weeks after the news that Britain’s culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt wishes to abolish the UK Film Council, the government funding body that has co-financed past Film4 projects including ‘Nowhere Boy’ and ‘Fish Tank’.
Asked whether film ideas from Irish filmmakers will be accepted by Film4, the group’s spokesperson tells us “Yes certainly, once their ideas fit in with Film4’s remit. Film4’s slate of films has to be seen to compliment each other.” The company are also open to projects that will not be shot in the UK, with the spokesperson reminding us that films such as ‘In Bruges’ , 'Hunger' and ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ received Film4 funding.
The Film4 controller is Tessa Ross who is also the controller of Channel 4 Drama. Guidelines for applicants are outlined on the Film4 website where it states that: “Literary excellence, television talent crossing over into the film arena and British independent talent are key to the Film4 remit.”
