It has been announced that Gar O’Brien is to take on the role of programmer for the 23rd Galway Film Fleadh. The event will take place from 5 - 10 July 2011. O’Brien replaces Felim Mac Dermott who has been Fleadh programmer for the last five years.
Gar O’Brien is a long-time member of the Galway Film Fleadh staff. Commenting on his new position, he said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to build upon the achievements of Felim and look forward to delivering an ever more varied and exciting programme for audiences both old and new.” Felim has told IFTN he is looking forward to his new prospects, simply explaining to us that he is “really excited about taking on new challenges and adventures.”
Having studied English and Psychology at UCC, Gar went on to complete a Masters Degree in Film Studies at the Huston School of Film and Digital Media in NUI Galway. He is currently writing a PhD on issues of complex and ambiguous narration in contemporary cinema.
Miriam Allen, Managing Director of the Galway Film Fleadh, praised Felim for his work with the Fleadh and congratulated his successor saying: “I wish Felim all the best and thank him for his amazing contribution to the Fleadh over the past five years and I look forward to working closely with Gar over the coming months to deliver the 23rd Galway Film Fleadh. Gar’s passion for film is both inexhaustible and infectious and I am certain he will bring his unparalleled enthusiasm and devotion for all kinds of cinema to this position."
