IFTN takes a look at three film festival stories of Irish interest this week, including ‘The Gardener’ winning a major award in Rome; Munich seeking short film submissions and the ‘Why Not? Adventure Film Festival’ coming to Dublin, Mayo and Galway.

Irish Short ‘The Gardener’ Wins in Rome

‘The Gardener’, a short film by Irish filmmaker Simon Daniels of Design for Life post production, has won the top prize at the DOCtorCLIP Award Poetry Film Festival in Rome.

Adapted from the work of Dublin poet Stephen James Smith, the short tackles the theme of parental relationships and stars Stephen James Smith and Rita Quinn.

In awarding it Best Film the judges said: ‘For its ability to excite, for its refinement of photography and installation, this film perfectly combines its images with its verses.’

Music for the short was composed and produced by Colm Ó Foghlú, which also featured the musical work of Ken Edge, Noreen O'Donoghue, Dublin String Ensemble and engineer Debbie Smith.

The short film is now available to watch in full by clicking on the link here.

Munich Film Society Seeks Shorts

The Munich Film Society is now accepting entries for its Kaliber35 International Short Film Festival, which will take place from 19th to 25th of June 2014.

The competition is open to non-German language films of all genres from any country, but subtitles must be provided for English language entries which must be under 15 mins in length.

Further information on submitting DVD preview copies can be found here.

In parallel with this, the ‘Kurz & Knapp’ (short and tight) competition invites filmmakers to write, shoot, edit and complete a short film in 35 hours, with full entry details listed here.

Why Not? Adventure Film Festival Heading to Dublin, Mayo & Galway

The Why Not? Adventure Film Festival arriving later this month will feature adventure sport films from Ireland and abroad, including the Irish premiere of ‘McConkey’ and ‘Arrival’.

Confirmed dates for its 2013 line-up are 16th Nov at The Sugar Club in Dublin; 21st Nov at the Linen Hall Theatre in Castlebar; and 30th Nov at An Taibhdhearc in Galway.

The Dublin schedule boasts a selection of short films – with one highlight being an experiment with headphones allowing viewers to listen to multiple soundtracks.

‘McConkey’ follows the life of athlete Shane McConkey, a pioneer of freeskiing and ski-base jumping, in a new film from Red Bull Media House and Matchstick Productions.

The full listings for the film festival are available on their website here.
