Gréasán na Meán Skillnet unveil new courses and workshops for 2015
10 Aug 2015 : Seán Brosnan
Gréasán na Meán Skillnet represents a growing core of the various media industries based in the Connemara Gaeltacht, and have identified media training needs that can be best addressed through an innovative and collaborative approach to training.

This year they have unveiled a number of new courses and workshops, which will be financially accessible to all and include spaces for jobseekers.

In these courses Gréasan na Meán will actively carry out its core belief - ‘through collaboration we flourish’ - by offering a clear set of aims and objectives which enable candidates to upskill, hone existing skills and ultimately fulfil their potential.

Established in 2003, Gréasan na Meán is part of the national Skillnets Network, and is composed primarily of Gaeltacht-based and Irish speaking companies. Skillnets are a network of businesses that have come together to develop new skills from training experts in all aspects of business and from each other. Training, innovation, communication, talent and storytelling in every form is at the heart of the Gréasan na Meán group, who endeavour to develop competence and skills in media hopefuls and employees to support the flourishing media industry in the West of Ireland.

A number of eagerly anticipated training courses are coming up over the next few months. They consist of a ‘Presenter/Researcher’ course, Actors workshops, Writers workshops and ‘PhotoShop Pro-Skill’ workshops. These courses will give trainees a clear picture of precisely what the media industry is looking for and where trainees might choose to place themselves in the future.

Gréasan na Meán hold regular workshops to aid trainees and draw from real-life experience; in July 2015 they organized a training course to produce a web based magazine programme which ran for the duration of the Galway Film Fleadh aptly named ‘Fleadh TV’. There were 21 unemployed media graduates and filmmakers who took part in this training initiative with the support of the Galway Film Fleadh. The training took on the format of trainer-lead workshops run by a combination of industry professionals including Declan Mc Bennett (of RTE), Niamh Guckian, (Freelance, RTE and The Irish Times), Olaf Tyraransen (Freelance Sunday Independent & Hot Press) and Sinead O’Carroll (Journal.ie). This expert training focused on teaching the trainees to exploit the skills they had, rather than on acquiring new technical skills.

The Gréasán na Meán Skillnet is linked with an ever-growing hub of media in the West of Ireland. At present their network membership is over 60 companies which have identified training needs that can be best addressed through an innovative and collaborative teaching approach.

Gréasán na Meán always aim to deliver affordable facilities to candidates, providing a range of courses at subsidized rates and are pleased to facilitate jobseekers by offering a number of free places on many courses. For more information go to www.greasannamean.ie or info@greasannamean.ie.
