Cillian Murphy has been nominated for Best Actor at the 96th Academy Awards. Oppenheimer received thirteen nominations, the highest of any film nominated this year, and Element Pictures’ Poor Things followed shortly after with eleven. Robbie Ryan has been nominated for Best Cinematography.
Of the various Irish actors eligible in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor categories, Cillian Murphy is the only actor to have received an Oscar nomination for the 96th Academy Awards. He is nominated for Best Actor for his performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer. The Christopher Nolan film has racked up 13 nominations, the highest number of nominations for any one film nominated at this year’s Academy Awards.
Element Pictures’ Poor Things received 11 nominations, including Best Cinematography for Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan. The other ten nominations include Best Picture, Best Director for Yorgos Lanthimos, Best Actress for Emma Stone, Best Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo, Best Adapted Screenplay for Tony McNamara, Production Design for James Price and Shona Heath, Costume Design for Holly Waddington, Original Score for Jerskin Fendrix, Makeup and Hairstyling for Nadia Stacey, Mark Couler, Josh Weston.
This year's nominations have set a number of new records for the Academy Awards. This is the first year that three female filmmakers are featured in the Best Picture category: Greta Gerwig for Barbie, Celine Song for Past Lives, and Justine Triet for Anatomy of a Fall. Lily Gadstone has become the first Native American woman nominated for Best Actress for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon.
The Academy Awards ceremony takes place on March 12th, 2024.
