Irish actor Andrew Scott won best supporting actor in a comedy series in the TV category at Sunday night's Critics' Choice Awards for his role as the 'hot priest' in Fleabag. The show went on to win best comedy series while creator and star Phoebe-Waller Bridge won best actress in a comedy series.

Viewed as a reliable indicator ahead of the Oscars, the Critics’ Choice Awards honour the best in TV and film each year. The 25th edition was held in Santa Monica last night and was presented by Taye Diggs.

Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood took home the coveted best picture award while Bong Joon Ho and Sam Mendes tied for best director for Parasite and 1917 respectively.

Other big winners include Joaquin Phoenix who won best actor for Joker, Renee Zellweger who took home the best actress award for her role in Judy, best supporting actor Brad Pitt for Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood, while best supporting actress went to Laura Dern for her Role in Netflix’s Marriage Story.  It was a good night for Netflix with The Irishman  winning best ensemble and the Eddie Murphy-starring Dolemite is my Name winning best Comedy.

On the TV front Best Drama went to Succession, whose Jeremy Strong took home the best actor in a drama series. HBO’s Watchmen swept the acting categories, with Regina King and Jean Smart taking home Best Actress and Best Supporting actress in a Drama Series respectively, while Apple TV+’s The Morning Show’s Billy Crudup won best supporting actor. Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us won best limited series, again for Netflix.

The  awards are presented by the Critics’ Choice Association, the largest critics organization in the United States and Canada, representing more than 400 television, radio and online critics. It was organized last year with the formal merger of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association, recognizing the blurring of the distinctions between film, television, and streaming content.
