Four Irish nominees will be in contention at this year’s BAFTA TV Award with Lisa McGee’s Troubles-set comedy ‘Derry Girls’ and actress Fiona Shaw leading the way.
The Irish actress has picked up a Best Supporting Actress nomination for ‘Killing Eve’. Shaw is nominated alongside Billie Piper for BBC Two’s ‘Collateral’, Keeley Hawes for BBC One’s hit series ‘The Bodyguard’ and Monica Dolan for BBC One’s ‘A Very English Scandal’.
‘Derry Girls’ writer and creator Lisa McGee has been given the nod for Best Scripted Comedy, a major achievement for Channel 4’s Troubles-set hit show, which is currently broadcasting its second season. ‘Derry Girls’ is joined by BBC Two’s ‘Mum’, Sky Atlantic/HBO series ‘Sally 4 Ever’ and Channel 4’s ‘Stath Lets Flats’.
Irish editor Tony Kearns has received a Best Editing nomination for his work on Black Mirror’s interactive episode ‘Bandersnatch’, while Irish producer Aoife Bower was named as part of ‘The Big Narstie Show’ production team nominated for Best Comedy Entertainment.
‘Killing Eve’ emerged as the clear frontrunner with 14 nominations although some were quick to point out that the rules of eligibility have been bent by BAFTA, which state that a show "must have had the worldwide premiere transmission in the UK" to be deemed acceptable. However, ‘Killing Eve’ premiered on BBC America five months prior to its British debut on BBC One.
Sharon Horgan’s award-winning family comedy ‘Catastrophe’ doesn’t feature with the final season of the popular series not eligible for this year’s awards. Another noticeable absentee is talk show host Graham Norton, who has missed the cut for Best Entertainment Performance having previously won the award last year.
The top BAFTA TV nominees include ‘Killing Eve’ (14), ‘A Very English Scandal’ (12), ‘Patrick Melrose’ (6), ‘The Little Drummer Girl’ (5), Northern Ireland Screen supported ‘Mrs. Wilson’ (4) and ‘Mum’ (4).
