'Tina', a short documentary by DIT graduate Paula Rouse has won the Best Irish Short Documentary Competition in the Irish Film Institute’s 3rd annual Stranger than Fiction Documentary Festival & Market.
The documentary, a graduate piece of work for the Degree in Communications Film and Broadcasting in DIT, tells the story of Ms. Tina Akinola Jinad; a Nigerian immigrant who has lived with her family in Ireland for the past 7 years. Set against the backdrop of Tina’s every day life as a mother, businesswoman, entrepreneur and organiser of the ‘Most Beautiful African Girl in Ireland’ competition, the documentary explores the reality of expressing identities in modern-day Ireland.
Rather than exploring the big picture of integration in Ireland in 2004, it draws on the common human experience of life with its trials and tribulations. The story examines the details of creating a multicultural, open-minded caring society, beyond colour and race, in the everyday activities of Tina Jinad.
The Stranger Than Fiction Documentary Festival runs annually at the Irish Film Institute. In all, the IFI screened 24 Irish premieres during the 2004 event, 10 new Irish documentaries counting among them, including The Land of Sex and Sinners, An tOileán sa Bhaile, Vendetta, The Snip, Sean – Under a Coloured Cap, and Fáilte Mr. President.
