Four new courses have been annouced for the coming months including the FÁS Screen Training Ireland two masterclasses with world renowned composer Conrad Pope, a course in TV Comedy Writing and the Galway Film Centre class in After Effects.

Conrad Pope is an award-wining composer who has worked on more than 80 feature films to date as a composer, orchestrator and conductor. Some of his credits include Troy, Harry Potter (Prizoner of Azkaban), Star Wars - The Phantom Menace, Sea Biscuit, Sleepy Hollow, The Matrix: Reloaded and The Matrix: Revolutions, Somethings Gotta Give and Falling Down. Among the awards his work has received are the prestigious Leonard Bernstein Fellowship and Fulbright Fellowship. He will tutor the Film Scoring For Producers and Directors Class on the 21st July 2004 and will hold a masterclass on the 22nd of July.
FÁS Screen Training Ireland Film Scoring For Producers and Directors - 21st July 2004
This course is aimed at Irish professionals involved in directing and/or producing in the film industry who wish to enhance their collaborative skills in relation to composers. The course will also provide participants with an overview of film scoring terminology and processes.
The course will explore the following:
understanding the function of music in film
finding a common language between director/producer and composer
spotting a film
reading a scene
mock-ups
temporary scores
orchestration and methods of recording
budgeting for music
choosing the right composer for your project.
FÁS Screen Training Ireland Conrad Pope Masterclass - 22nd July 2004
Aimed at Irish professionals involved in composing, directing, producing, and editing in the film industry. This masterclass will provide an overview of film composition and enhance participants’ ability to collaborate effectively in the film scoring process.
The course will explore the following, with illustrative examples:
understanding the function of music in film
finding a common language between director/producer and composer
understanding the rhythm of editing and its influence on the formulation of the score
choosing the right composer for your project
current trends in film scoring.
FÁS Screen Training Ireland Television Comedy Writing Course - 14th & 15th August and 18th & 19th September 2004
This course is designed for writers working in the Irish film and television industry, and theatre and comedy writers planning to move into television writing. The course will explore a number of areas of television comedy writing, including comedy drama, sitcoms, sketch shows and newer comedy forms such as mockumentaries. The training approach will involve case studies and group course work.

writing for actors

Galway Film Centre Course in After Effects. 24-25th July 2004
Adobe After Effects 5.5 is the programme of choice for motion graphics and
visual effects maestros. Few other software packages can match its powerful
and flexible 2-D and 3-D compositing and animation tool set. After Effects
5.5 offers excellent integration with Photoshop, and Final Cut Pro. The course will be tutored by Aindreas O’Gallchoir.
This weekend course will equip non-linear editors with the skills to use
After Effects to do the following:
- importing the various types of footage
- composition setup/timeline operation/playback
- the layering metaphor (as it relates to photoshop)
- general overview of masking/selection and effects tools
- breakdown of the different effect/colour correct/distortion filters
- in depth analysis of the colour correction tool suite
- use of masking in colour correction (simulating dodge & burn hand
tinting)
