Universal
studios have signed Irish director Enda McCallion to make his feature
directorial debut with a movie adaptation of id software’s ‘Doom’ computer
game.
The movie is a science fiction tale, set in the
|
future of 2145, where a space marine on the Phobos moon of Mars must battle monsters who infiltrate the base. The script has been adapted from the Doom 3 version of the computer game which is due to be released this year on PC and Xbox.
Enda McCallion is a highly respected and long established director who has made his bread and butter within the commercial and music video sectors for the past ten years. ‘Doom’ is his first venture into feature films. Born and raised in Ireland and a graduate of the Royal College of Art in London, he has worked with a number of high profile clients including DIAGO and metal band Nine Inch Nails.
The ‘Doom’ project has been in circulation since late 2002 with Warner Bros and Columbia Pictures holding the rights to the screen adaptation. However, the terms of the initial contract between id and these studios stipulated that the rights would revert back to id if no progress has been made within 16 months.
The rights have now changed hands and Universal Studios are funding the film. The script is written by Dave Callaham with Lorenzo Di Bonaventura (Constantine) and John Wells (The Peacemaker, ER, The Good Thief) being named as producers.
