Vicky Krieps will play Sophie Toscan du Plantier in Re-creation, a docudrama about the French film and TV producer’s murder in 1996, co-directed by Jim Sheridan and David Merriman.
Vicky Krieps (Corsage, Phantom Thread) will star in Re-creation, a docu-drama co-written and co-directed by Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In The Name of the Father) and David Merriman (The State of Being Human). The film is being presented in the Venice Gap-Financing Market.
Re-creation is centred around the murder of French film and TV producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier in 1996. The murder took place in West Cork, when she travelled alone to her holiday home in Schull. Twenty-eight years later the case remains unsolved. Sheridan has previously covered the same subject matter in his documentary series Murder at the Cottage.
The film blends documentary and drama elements, with the documentary sections of the production shooting in Ireland, France and the US, and the drama sections of the film shooting on a sound stage in Luxembourg. The production is supported by Screen Ireland, Film Fund Luxembourg, and Eurimages.
“Re-creation is a hybrid film between fiction and reality,” explained Sheridan, speaking to Vanity Fair. “I began my career on a theatre stage, writing and making plays, before moving into film. Fiction has been my form of expression throughout my creative career.”
“We want to use fiction, which is the expressive form I know best, to challenge the whole narrative around this case, built on negligence and convenient truths.”
Tina O’Reilly (A Turning Tide in the Life of Man) is producing for Hell’s Kitchen, and Fabrizio Maltese (The Invitation) will produce for Luxembourg’s Joli Rideau Media. Sheridan is executive producing.
Re-creation is set for a theatrical release in late 2024.
