Colm Bairéad’s Irish language feature film continues to go from strength to strength with two new festival wins, as it ramps up its momentum ahead of the Academy Award longlist for Best International Feature Film being announced.

Earlier this week, An Cailín Ciúin, or The Quiet Girl internationally, was jointly awarded the Audience Favourite Award alongside Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin (another Irish Oscar contender) at the Film Fest 919 in North Carolina. That news was swiftly followed by another award win, this time at the Newport Beach Film Festival, where it picked up the Best Picture Jury Award.

Alongside the continuous critical acclaim from festivals and critics alike, the hope is that this momentum will earn Bairéad’s film a place on the Best International Film list when it is revealed in December. The longlist of 15 qualifying films will be announced by The Academy on December 21st with the five Oscar nominees revealed on January 24th. An Cailín Ciúin aims to become the first Irish entry ever to receive a nomination in this category.

Separate to the film’s festival success, Bankside Films has confirmed it has struck theatrical deals across a number of new international territories including ASC Distribution for France, Front Row in the Middle East, Cinéart for Benelux, and DDDream for China.

The film has also sold in South Korea (Choix Pictures); Hungary (Mozinet); Spain: (La Aventura Cine); Eastern Europe (HBO pay-TV); Taiwan (Hooray Films); Turkey (Mars Productions); Indonesia (PT Falcon); and will feature on airlines across the world, except UK, Australia/New Zealand, and Italy through Encore Inflight. The film has already been acquired in previous deals including Ireland (Break Out); UK (Curzon); Italy (Officine UBU); US and Canada (Super); and Australia (Madman Entertainment).

Based on the acclaimed story, Foster by Claire Keegan, An Cailín Ciúin is a complex and delicate coming-of-age drama that explores questions of family, neglect, and loss through the eyes of its young protagonist. The film marks the feature film debut of writer/director Colm Bairéad and producer Cleona Ní Chrualaoi of Inscéal.

Set in rural Ireland in 1981, An Cailín Ciúin follows Cáit (Catherine Clinch) as she is sent from her overcrowded, dysfunctional household to live with distant relatives for the summer. She is welcomed with open arms by Eibhlín (Carrie Crowley), but her husband, Seán (Andrew Bennett) keeps Cáit at arm’s length. Slowly, however, a warmth grows within this makeshift family and Cáit begins to blossom in their care. But in this house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one painful truth.

Since its release last May, the film has been a major hit at international film festivals, winning a slew of awards including a Grand Prix Award at the Berlinale, seven Irish Film & Television Academy Awards, and has become a critic’s darling garnering 5-star reviews across the board.

An Cailín Ciúin is Ireland’s entry for the Oscars® Best International Feature Film category at the upcoming 95th annual Academy Awards, having been chosen by the Irish Film & Television Academy earlier this year.

The film recently made history as it crossed the €1million mark at the Irish and UK box office, an impressive feat for any independent film, but one that had never come close to being accomplished by an Irish language feature film prior to this.

The film was funded by Screen Ireland, TG4, and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland as part of the Cine4 scheme, and shot on location in Meath and Dublin in 2020.
