IFTN Festive Q&A with Emily Taaffe of 'The Dig'
18 Dec 2018 : Nathan Griffin
In the run in to Christmas, we have invited some of Irelandís leading Film & TV talents to take part in IFTNís festive Q&A.

A graduate of the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Emily Taaffe has worked extensively in British theatre with leading roles on the Olivier and Lyttleton stages at the National Theatre and with the Royal Shakespeare Company. On screen Taaffe has enjoyed roles in several noteworthy British television series including ‘Stan Lee’s Lucky Man’, ‘Call the Midwife’ and ‘Atlantis’.

Closer to home, Taffe starred in the BBC Northern Ireland drama series ‘Paula’ and more recently played the role of Roberta McKenna in ‘The Dig’, which picked up the Best Irish Feature award at the 2018 Galway Film Fleadh.

IFTN journalist Nathan Griffin caught up with Taaffe ahead of the festive season.

What was your highlight of 2018?

“Having The Dig win Galway Film Fleadh was a great moment. It's such a wonderful festival and having the approval of the home crowd is a really special feeling. Especially for a project made with so much love. And mud.”

What was your favourite Film of 2018?

“I don't normally like horror films (too easily scared) but I loved everything about A Quiet Place. I thought it was so clever and brilliantly executed. But also I'd like to give a big shout out to Crazy Rich Asians and Black Panther.”

What TV Show did you binge watch this year?

“The Marvelous Mrs Maisel...I love everything about it. I've been a huge Amy Sherman-Palladino fan since the Gilmore Girls days but this takes it to a new level. It’s joy in television form.”

What Irish talent have you been impressed with over the past 12 months?

“I'm going to say Brian Falconer here. Producers and those not in the spotlight don't get much in the way of the praise but Brian was a star to work with on The Dig and I think Out of Orbit are developing exciting and interesting work. One to watch for sure.”

What International talent would you most like to work with?

“Amy Sherman-Palladino.”

What two film/television personalities would you most like to have dinner with? (invite over for Christmas dinner) (Dead/Alive)

“God, so many...hmmm...I mean I'm going to carry on my Amy Sherman-Palladino obsession here and have her round for some turkey and David Attenborough because he's the best isn't he? And I bet he could light the pudding on fire.”

What’s your favourite movie to watch on Christmas day?

“I love Miracle on 34th Street. The 90's version. Pure, unadulterated schmaltz. Perfect for watching whilst devouring the obligatory selection box.”
