IFTN Festive Q&A with Stefanie Preissner
17 Dec 2018 : Nathan Griffin
In the run in to Christmas, we have invited some of Ireland’s leading Film & TV talents to take part in IFTN’s festive Q&A.

A Spanish and drama graduate from University College Cork, Stefanie Preissner is an established writer, actress and published author. After attending the Gaiety School of Acting in 2008, Preissner wrote and starred in ‘Solpadeine is my Boyfriend’, a one-woman show for the Dublin Fringe Festival, which went on to tour internationally. The show was then recreated for RTÉ Radio Drama on One and became RTÉ’s most downloaded podcasts of all time. Preissner also created a series of documentaries entitled ‘How To Adult’ for the RTÉ Player.

Preissner is best known as the writer and creator of RTÉ2 comedy ‘Can’t Cope, Won’t Cope’, starring Seana Kerslake, Nika McGuigan and Amy Huberman. The series was picked up by BBC 3 in 2017, Netflix in the US and UK in 2018 and earned Preissner a nomination for Best Writer – Comedy and Soap at the 2018 IFTA Gala Television Awards.

IFTN journalist Nathan Griffin caught up with Preissner ahead of the festive season.

What was your highlight of 2018?

“Meeting Gay Byrne. He’s been my hero since I was a kid. When I learned the truth about Santa it sent me into a tail spin. I remember crying ‘Santa isn’t real?! What about Jesus?’ And mam said ‘well Jesus is kind of real’ and then I roared ‘what about gay Byrne’. I was so enamoured by the toy show man - he was magical and mystical like Santa and Jesus. I met him this year. Totally worth it.”

What are you most looking forward to working on in the New Year?

“My new book comes out in May. I’m really excited to show you all.”

What was your favourite Film of 2018?

“Disney Pixar’s Coco had me weeping and the sound track played in my car for months after.”

What TV Show did you binge watch this year?

“I am addicted to The Good Doctor. But I don’t like binge watching anything so I watch one episode a week on a Tuesday night. It’s my thing.”

What Irish talent have you been impressed with over the past 12 months?
“Cork singer Ali Sherlock is getting more impressive every week. Between herself and Katie Taylor, there's no stopping Irish Talent.”

What International talent would you most like to work with?

“I'm a big fan of Arianna Huffington and i would love to work with her as an Executive Producer on one of my projects. I also have major respect for the edit of Three Identical Strangers so Michael Harte is on my list even though he's one of our own. I'm always trying to scope out new talent for a passion project i will eventually get to and Makena-Lei Gordon- Carnahan and the kid from The Florida Project are on my radar.”

What two film/television personalities would you most like to have dinner with and why? (invite over for Christmas dinner) (Dead/Alive)

“Oh that sounds like way too much work. I want my xmas dinner to just be me and my mam and my nana and not have to make any unnecessary small talk with strangers. Work is work, home is home.”

What’s your favourite movie to watch on Christmas day?

“Home Alone in the morning over presents, in the afternoon Nana and I curl up and watch the Snowman and in the evening it's got to be A Muppet Christmas Carol”
