'Black 47' Opens in Cinemas Across Ireland
05 Sep 2018 :
Lance Daly's widely anticipated, revenge thriller opens Wednesday

Set during the Great Irish Famine, 'Black 47' follows the story of an Irish ranger on his return to his homeland of Connemara, after serving the British army abroad. Finding his natives starving and his family decimated, Feeney (James Frechville) sets off on a bloody rampage against the men responsible.

Also starring International actors Hugo Weaving (The Matrix), Jim Broadbent (Oscar® winner for 'Iris') and Freddie Fox (King Arthur: Legend of The Sword), the film also carries a strong Irish contingent including prolific stage and screen actor Stephen Rea (The Crying Game), and IFTA winning actors Sarah Greene (Penny Dreadful), Barry Keoghan (The Killing of a Sacred Deer) and Moe Dunford (Vikings).

Following its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February, the film opened both the Audi Dublin International Film Festival and Belfast Film Festival and was the closing film of the Galway Film Fleadh earlier this summer. 'Black 47' is also set to have its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival later this month.

The feature film was produced by Macdara Kelleher and directed by Lance Daly of Fastnet Films. Screenplay was written by PJ Dillon, Pierce Ryan, and Lance Daly with contribution from Eugene O'Brien. The original story was written by PJ and Pierce who also made the short film 'An Ranger'. Declan Quinn was DoP for the project and John Walters edited. Wildcard Distributions will oversee the release of the film

Speaking about the cinema release, director Lance Daly said: "I am delighted to work with Wildcard Distribution on the Irish cinema release of Black 47 this September. Given the singular importance of the Great Famine in Irish history, and that it has never been seen on our cinema screens before, our cast and crew felt a huge responsibility to make a film that was not only historically accurate and emotionally true, but also undeniably entertaining, so that the story could reach as many people as possible. I am immensely proud of the achievement of the entire team, both in front of and behind the camera, and I hope that Irish audiences will be as moved watching the movie as we were making it.

Variety's Jessica Kiang says, "This may well be the first encounter international audiences will have had with the Great Hunger, and for them Daly delivers a resonant, beautifully performed Irish Western that benefits from the exotic sound of Irish Gaelic spoken as a living language, and the brackish majesty of cinematographer Declan Quinn's wide vistas."

Screendaily says, the film "will also play best at home, where the context is widely understood and appreciated and still haunts the country today. Using the 'Great Hunger' as a backdrop for a revenge western is an interesting way to exorcise old ghosts, but the end result drains pathos from the tragedy while muting The Proposition-style genre elements."

Donald Clarke of the Irish Times, says it's "An epic famine drama", giving the film a four star review.

'Black 47' opens in over 100 Irish cinemas on 5th September. Wildcard Distribution is the Irish distributor.
