RTÉ Host Global Broadcast of Papal Visit to Ireland
15 Aug 2018 : Nathan Griffin
As Ireland’s National Public Service Media Organisation, RTÉ is assuming the role of Host Broadcaster for Pope Francis’ visit to Ireland on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th August.

This will see RTÉ provide live multi-camera coverage of all of Pope Francis’ public engagements to media organisations across the globe.

Aspects of the trip that will be covered include:

  • Dublin Airport Arrival
  • Áras an Uachtaráin for meeting with President Higgins
  • Dublin Castle for meeting with An Taoiseach and Civic Society
  • Pro-Cathedral for pastoral event
  • Capuchin Day Centre for pastoral event
  • Pope Mobile tour through centre of Dublin
  • Croke Park for Festival of Families Event
  • Knock Airport and Shrine
  • Phoenix Park for Papal Mass
  • Dublin Airport Departure

As Host Broadcaster, RTÉ will also facilitate domestic and international media free of charge. The delivery of this World Feed will be done in conjunction with the European Broadcasting Union in order to maximise global satellite reach.

In order to generate this World Feed, RTÉ is undertaking its largest deployment of OB facilities since the 2016 State Commemoration of the Centenary of the Easter Rising. This will see 10 individual OB feeds generated across the two-day visit with over 60 camera positions being installed.

In addition to RTÉ's own units, OB facilitates are being provided by NEP, TVM, BBC NI, Vitel, Riverside Television and Pi Communications.

The Live Event TV coverage is an in-house RTÉ production led by Executive Producer for Special Events Margaret Bennett, working with Executive Producers Niamh Ní Churnain and John O'Regan.

The Papal visit to Ireland takes place on Saturday, August 26th & Sunday, August 27th.
