IMRO Music for Screen Seminar – Deadline: Today, Dec 6th

The Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) and the Mechanical Copyright Protection Society of Ireland (MCPSI), in association with Screen Training Ireland, are hosting a seminar designed to offer attendees a full overview of music licensing for audiovisual productions, and to explore effective strategies and options for the licensing of music.

The event takes place on Tuesday, December 12th from 4-6pm at IMRO, Copyright House, Pembroke Row, Lower Baggot Street, Dublin 2. This is a free event.

The seminar will explore wider issues around music and screen content, and offer a broad picture of the landscape of music for the screen. The seminar will include an overview on music licensing from MCPSI, and a panel discussion around music licensing and supervision in the context of recent Irish productions.

Panel members confirmed for the event are:

Ray Harman

Ray Harman is a multi award winning composer for film, TV, theatre, contemporary dance and games. Having started as a guitarist and songwriter with Something Happens, he morphed into a composer for media and has scored for TV and films such as Love/Hate, The Young Offenders, The Farthest, A Dark Song, Eipic, One Million Dubliners, Patrick’s Day and Inspector George Gently.

Nicky Gogan

EMMY-awarded Nicky Gogan is one of Ireland’s best-known producers. She founded the Darklight Digital Festival (1999) and from then began producing animations, artist films, features and documentaries. She most recently produced the much-praised animated sequences for Tommy Palotta’s ‘LAST HIJACK’, which opened the Panorama Dokumenta at the Berlin Film Festival (2014) and won an EMMY Award for best online production in the non-fiction category in Cannes. Nicky is a graduate of EAVE 2008. In 2006 Nicky co-founded Dublin/New York based production company Still Films where she works as a producer and a director.   Feature ‘BLACK ICE’ was one of Ireland’s top-grossing national theatrical releases in 2013 while 2010’s IFTA-nominated doc self-distributed ‘PYJAMA GIRLS’ to date holds the highest per-screen take of any film in the Irish Film Institute. Animation ‘WE, THE MASSES’ won a Spirit award at the Brooklyn Film Festival (2012).  Nicky produced the 2016 Niall McCann-directed feature documentary ‘LOST IN FRANCE’, exploring the rise of the Scottish independent music scene in the 90’s.  Nicky is currently producing for animation/VFX/post studio Piranha Bar.

Dina Coughlan

Dina Coughlan is an Irish based Music Supervisor who has worked on film, TV & ad projects for over 15 years. Through her company, Planet of Sound, she has had the opportunity to work on a dynamic range of productions, including most recently the hit Irish comedy ‘The Young Offenders’ (film & TV Series), the upcoming independent film ‘The Belly of the Whale’ and Fáilte Ireland’s ‘Bedtime Stories’ ad for Ireland’s Ancient East. She continues to work as a Music Consultant for Discovery Networks in the US on various productions, promos and branding campaigns and also includes work with Blue Man Group, Chevy and video game projects among her experience.

Dina started her career in music publicity, working at various independent record labels in New York City and with an array of artists including Shonen Knife, the Wrens, Blackalicous and Luna. She then segued into music supervision helping to launch the music department for the Oxygen TV network in the US where she oversaw all music placements for original series, movies, network promos and branding initiatives. At Oxygen, Dina also served as a Producer on the long running concert series ‘Custom Concert’ which included LL Cool J, John Legend, Alanis Morrissette and Kenny Chesney.

In addition to Planet of Sound, Dina also runs Tremolo Songs, an independent music publisher whose catalogue includes a diverse roster of Irish songwriters.

JP Canning

JP Canning works as Senior Licensing Executive for MCPS Ireland. Since 2006, JP has worked across different departments in IMRO, from performance royalty distribution to his current role in mechanical licensing, which includes Blanket Licensing for TV and Radio (Main Broadcasters and Independent Production Companies), Production Music Licensing, Licenses for Programme Sales, Individual Sync Licensing, CDs & DVDs (including Covermounts, Premium Products and Limited Manufacture Licenses), Background Music Service Providers and IMRO/MCPSI Community & Temporary Radio Licenses.

Mechanical Copyright Protection Society Ireland Limited (MCPSI) is an organisation which represents thousands of composers and publishers of music. By way of agency agreement with MCPS and through their reciprocal agreements with other organisations around the world, MCPSI also represents the interests of many thousands of other music copyright owners in other countries.

MCPSI licenses companies and individuals who record musical works and collects and distributes the royalties payable under those licences.

James Hickey

James Hickey is the Chief Executive of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/ The Irish Film Board and former Partner and Head of the Media and Entertainment law group of Ireland’s largest law firm, Matheson Ormsby Prentice. He was well known for representing many leading Irish film and television production companies as well as actors, writers, directors, composers during his time working in the field of media and entertainment law. He was formerly Chairman of the Projects Arts Centre and the Abbey Theatre and currently serves as a member of IMRO’s Board of Directors.

Luke Griffin

Distribution and Membership Manager of PPI, Luke Griffin has worked at PPI (Phonographic Performance Ireland) since 2007. The Department distributes Public Performance and Broadcasting Sound Recording Royalties to its Members (Indie and Major Labels). The department regularly clears proposed television sound recording “blanket licence” usage, or assists producers in identifying and contacting the rights holders if the proposed use is outside of the companies licensing remit.

Luke is a graduate of BCFE Rock School, and has an interest in the Music Industry side as well as the creativity side – writing, playing and recording music in his spare time.
