‘Nightflyers’ Set to go Straight to Series in Troy Studios
23 Nov 2017 : Nathan Griffin
There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the set of the new George.R.R. Martin (‘Game of Thrones’) Sci-Fi series ‘Nightflyers’ since it was announced that it would shoot a sixteen week pilot in Troy Studio, Limerick.

IFTN reported back in September that SYFY were in negotiations with Netflix over a distribution deal that would see the project go straight to series. However, although strong reports out of Hollywood suggested the deal was imminent, no official confirmation materialised.

Now in the run-up to the Christmas holidays, filming has yet to begin in Troy as the ‘Nightflyers’ set is still in production. It is estimated that six workshops are currently in use at Troy with over fifty Irish craftspeople employed along with a host of local suppliers who have been recruited to assist with the production.

According to Mike Cantwell, CEO of Innovate Limerick, a crucial body in helping complete the Troy Studios deal, it is now expected that the work on the show won’t begin until early February as he confirmed that ‘Nightflyers’ will be filming its entire season in the New Year adding that the show is going “straight into series, which has (already) gone into production.”

Speaking with the Limerick Leader, Mike Cantwell, Innovate Limerick CEO said:

“The original plan was that they would have filming completed by Christmas, but because the construction phase is at a scale which is much bigger than any of us ever thought, they will be in construction until end of January, February and then filming will commence roughly around then until probably around the end of August. And we believe it is the biggest production that was ever done in the Republic.”

The ‘Nightflyers’ series marks a significant moment for the studio as it opens its doors to an international production for the first time. The Series which is based on the 1987 Novella was only due for a 16 week lease in Troy Studios but now looks set to remain busy for the foreseeable future with the shows director Doug Liman (‘The Bourne Identity’) stating that ‘Nightflyers’ is a “big ambitious series and I think we’ll be in Ireland for many years”

The site of the former Dell factory, Troy Studios boasts a 350,000 square foot facility, including three massive soundstages, one estimated to be 30,800 sq ft while the other two are 18,000 sq ft. The main selling point of the site is the height of the ‘high bay’ area of the studios, with the apex of indoor facilities reaching up to 60 feet, a luxury in Ireland and a ideal space to create sets and film with ease.

Additions to the crew have come thick and fast since the show was announced including Dan Cerone as showrunner and a host of other well known names being attached. ‘Nightflyers’ will be executive produced by David Bartis, Doug Liman and Gene Klein of Hypnotic; Cerone; Buhler; Alison Rosenzweig and Michael Gaeta of Gaeta Rosenzweig Films; Lloyd Ivan Miller and Alice P. Neuhauser of Lloyd Ivan Miller Productions, as well as writer and producer of the 1987 ‘Nightflyers’ feature adaptation, Robert Jaffe.

The show follows a group of misfit scientists and a powerful telepath who embark on an expedition to the edge of our solar system aboard The Nightflyer — a ship with a small, tightknit crew and a reclusive captain — in the hope of making contact with alien life. But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place, they start to question one another, and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought.

Troy Studios Limited was established by Ardmore Studios’ Chief Executive Siún Ní Raghallaigh and Ardmore co-owner Ossie Kilkenny.
