Celebrating 25 Years of MEDIA Collection Curated for Volta
24 Oct 2016 : Katie McNeice
The MEDIA programme has been a means for the EU to fund the development, distribution and promotion of film and television content since 1991. A selection of MEDIA funded films has been curated by Creative Europe Desk Ireland MEDIA in order to mark the anniversary.

Volta Video on Demand was launched in 2010 with the support of MEDIA funding and will feature the films until Friday October 28th. It features small innovative collections including Irish MEDIA Films, European Female Talent, Recent European Gems and Oscar Nominated MEDIA Films.

Among the Irish titles are ‘Jimmy’s Hall’ directed by Ken Loach, starring Barry Ward (The Truth Commissioner) which went on to become nominated for the Palme D’Or at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

The Oscar-nominated ‘Secret of Kells’ from Tomm Moore also features, as does Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘The Lobster’ starring Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz.

International titles feature László Nemes’s ‘Son of Saul’, Pawel Pawlikowski’s ‘Ida’, both of which are Oscar-winning titles.

In 2014, MEDIA became part of the new Creative Europe programme which supports the European cultural and audiovisual sectors with a budget of €1.46 billion.

The Irish audio visual industry has received inward investment of more than €40 million in MEDIA support to hundreds of projects over the last twenty five years.

A core mission of Creative Europe MEDIA is to encourage audiences to discover and watch great European film and programming in supported cinemas, on broadcast TV, and online.
