‘The Land of the Enlightened’ joins ‘History’s Future’ in competition at Rotterdam

‘The Land of the Enlightened’ is also scheduled to screen at Sundance this month
International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) has revealed the eight titles that will compete in the revamped Hivos Tiger Awards Competition at this year’s 45th edition (Jan 27-Feb 7) with Fastnet films documentary ‘The Land of the Enlightened’ joining previously announced Irish co-production ‘History’s Future’.

The films will compete as part of the Hivos Tiger Awards Competition at the festival. They will screen along with six other films for a prize worth €40,000.

Pieter-Jan De Pue’s documentary ‘The Land of the Enlightened’ which was produced by Irish producer Morgan Bushe for Fastnet Films, charts the complex Afghani war economy told through the eyes of the children who have found themselves caught up in the on-going American occupation. The film will have its’ world premiere at Sundance, where it will screen in competition in the International Documentary Strand. ‘The Land of the Enlightened’ is an Irish/Dutch/German/Belgian co-production.

IFTN reported back in September 2015 that Irish co-production ‘History’s Future’ would screen at Rotterdam.

The debut feature from renowned artist Fiona Tan, ‘History’s Future’ fuses fiction and documentary into a visual essay charting an amnesiac’s odyssey into regaining memory via a Europe in turmoil. The film stars Irish actors Mark O’Halloran (writer of ‘Viva’ which has just been short-listed for the 2016 Foreign Language Oscar) and Brian Gleeson (currently starring in RTÉ drama ‘Rebellion’) alongside Anne Consigny, Denis Lavant and Johanna ter Steege. It was written by Tan and Jonathan Romney and produced by Cormac Fox for Vico Films, Floor Onrust for Family Affair Films and Benny Dreschel for RohFilm.

‘History’s Future’ is an Irish/Dutch/German co-production and was financed by the Irish Film Board, Netherlands Film Fund, Mondriaan Fonds, Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung and MEDIA.

IFFR takes place Jan 27-Feb 7 with the winners of the Hivos Tiger Awards Competition being announced on February 5th.
