Aiden Gillen Confirmed for ‘The Maze Runner’ Sequel
29 Sep 2014 : Sean Brosnan
Fox have announced that Aiden Gillen has been cast in the main villain role for the 'Maze Runner' sequel, which is being fast-tracked for a 2015 release after the box office success of the first film out this month.

‘The Maze Runner’ was released in Malaysia on 11th September and the US on 18th September and has made almost $150 million in its opening two weeks.

‘The Maze Runner’ is a young adult science fiction thriller series adapted from the novel of the same name by James Dashner, with the second book, entitled ‘The Scorch Trials’, following a group of teenagers as they find themselves on the run on an Earth that is now a desolate wasteland, ravaged by solar flares. Gillen will play the primary antagonist Jansen who comes to be referred to as Rat-Man.

Gillen has previously had roles in other big-budget films as ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Shanghai Knights’, while garnering two IFTA awards for his work on the television shows ‘The Wire’ and RTE’s ‘Love/Hate’. He also had a large supporting role in ‘Calvary’, this year’s Best Film winner at the IFTA Awards and is a cast member of the HBO series ‘Game of Thrones’.

As IFTN previously reported earlier this month, Gillen also plays one of the leads in John Carney’s new feature ‘Sing Street’, which is currently shooting in Dublin.

Gillen will also play former Taoiseach Charlie Haughey in RTÉ's three part series ‘Citizen Charlie’, due to air later this year.

‘The Maze Runner’ will be released in Irish theatres on October 10th.
