Industry professionals Fergal O’Hanlon (‘Yu Ming is Ainm Dom’, ‘Paddywhackery’), Marian Quinn (‘32A’) and Fiona Daly (‘In the Name of the Father’, ‘About Adam’) are currently delivering modules in their areas of expertise – cinematography, direction and production design, respectively – to students in Dundalk Institute of Technology. The students are studying for their BA and BA (Honours) in Video & Film Production in the section of Creative Media in the institute.
IFTA-nominee cinematographer Fergal O’Hanlon is in the middle of giving a 3-week intensive cinematography module to 3rd year students on the BA in Video & Film Production as they prepare to shoot the final films for their course. For the period, students on the course immerse themselves in both the theoretical and the practical world of the cinematographer whilst taking a break from all other modules.
Director Marian Quinn is currently working on campus, delivering a 2-week intensive Directing module in March to 4th year students studying Video & Film Production.
Meanwhile, production designer and art director Fiona Daly, who has been working in the film industry for over twenty years, will also be delivering a Production Design module to the 4th years of the same course. This module started on Feb 10th and will last until the end of the week.
Access to industry professionals has been a core feature of the Dundalk IT BA & BA (Hons) in Video & Film Production since its inception. Students have the opportunity to practice and learn in small groups in an intimate setting in the facilities of the recently renovated Carroll building on the DKIT campus. It is equipped with a full HD TV Studio, a HD screening room with Dolby Surround Sound, editing labs and suites, and more (see https://www.dkit.ie/creative-media/resources-facilities for more details).
Members of the film and TV industry hold masterclasses and lectures at numerous points throughout the semester. Last semester’s speakers included Ronan O’ Coisdealbha (Head of Sport, TG4), Denise Fogarty (Production Manager), Desmond Bell (Documentary Filmmaker), Frank Agnew (Producer), Harvey O’Brien (Author & Film Theorist), and Mairtin de Barra (Director).
