‘The Walshes’ is a new sitcom created by ‘Father Ted’ writer Graham Lineham and the five strong Irish comedy troupe Diet of Worms.
Comedy group 'Diet of Worms' consists of Philippa Dunne, Amy Stephenson, Rory Connolly, Niall Gaffney and Shane Langan, who collaborated with Linehan on the series. This is the first non-audience sitcom that Linehan has directed.
The script is based on the 2010 web series 'A Taste of Home' and follows an Irish family, the Walshes, through a video camera operated by an unseen uncle. The Walshes are a warm, tight knit family from the West Dublin suburb of Strollinstown.
It stars Niall Gaffney (Tony), Philippa Dunne (Carmel), Amy Stephenson (Ciara), Rory Connolly (Rory), Shane Langan (Graham) and Owen Roe (Martin), who is best known for his role as Paul Dooley in 'Ballykissangel'. Roe recently announced that even though the sitcom is being shot in London, it will be set in Ireland.
The pilot episode of 'The Walshes' will be directed by Linehan and produced by Richard Boden, director of ‘Blackadder’ and ‘Time Gentleman Please’. The pair also previously collaborated with each other on the award-winning series 'The IT Crowd'.
The series is being made by Linehan's 'Delightful Pictures' alongside independent production house Boom Pictures who are producing the show for the BBC and RTÉ. Chris Sussman is the commissioning editor for the BBC and Eddie Doyle the commissioning editor for RTÉ.
'The Walshes' debuts on RTÉ One on March 6. Check out a preview for the series below:
